Mike Turnlund, Head of Field Operations for Containerized Storage at DataCore Software, joins Alan Shimel at KubeCon to discuss DataCore’s NVMe Over Fabrics specialized block storage that can run block storages at native NVMe I/O speeds. Additionally, they talk about DataCore’s adoption and embrace of open source.

We are live again here at Detroit cubecon 2022 You know believe it or not. I was looking at the statistics and analytics from yesterday. We had over 11,000 folks joining and watching us yesterday.
And if you watch this yesterday or the day before we hope you enjoyed our coverage trying to give you a little flavor of what's going on here. So continuing and wrapping up, you know our final day our first guest today is my turnling from datacore. Hey, Mike, welcome.
Thank you. Thanks for having us. It's a pleasure to have yarn here.
So Mike, I guess I I feel obligated. I know everyone out here knows data core. So please data course of Pioneer in software defined storage.
The company itself has been around for 20 plus years. Our chief product has been Symphony, which I think a lot of people are very familiar with you know that right. So we are that we've also picked up but the company's chosen to modernize the portfolio, so Chicken with sand Symphony great stuff, but rather than turn that into a constainer store or some sort of object.
You know S3 object thing data core is acquired karingo in the last couple of years now has the Swarm product for S3 typed object storage and then a year ago. They had made a majority investment two years ago in Maya data who does all of the open EBS work and is the Proctors for open EBS and pulled them in for specifically containerized storage. So they're taking a very new strategy for data core by going open source first for introducing our software.
We've got some good drivers for full featured for some of the older kubernetes environments what I'm really here to talk about today is my store which is our nvme over fabric specialized block storage. So we're able to run what what does it do? And why do you care right?
You can run it basically you can run your block. Storage at Native nvme I/O speeds so rather than being throttled by the classic SATA protocols. So it's the older SSD protocols.
They would give you a little over a little under a gigabit a second. Right? We're now able to rent at five gigabits a second for reads and about half of that for rights in a container native environment blah blah kubernetes.
The point is you've got a microservices environment where you can get line speed IO, you know, I love it. So what is that mean? It means you're latency goes down.
Yep, and our customers are seeing it. We're seeing it around different databases. We're seeing it around different just bare metal deployments and service providers.
We're very easy to provision easy to use we run behind the kubernetes control plane. So you're using classic kubernetes tools to provision us. You don't need to learn something there.
You can use what already is and we purposely want to be a best fit utility for Kubernetes environments that's working. And we've got other customers here at the trade show. I'll put in a plug for Siva.
If you're here in the floor, please go talk to them. They're running us in their backbone. It's going well.
We've done some benchmarking against our largest competitors. Not going to name them but I think we can figure out who they are. We're able to get we did some testing with just a very large database mongodb.
We were able to get about two and a half times to Performance of our biggest competitor. So as IO has been a constraint our value proposition is taking away that constraint, you know, really a simple story a very effective story. It's a very robust I set a software.
We're actually pleased to see the stability. We've got, you know very few events. I'll call them and we haven't seen an event in quite a few months now.
So it's things are going well good. I want to jump in on this in a second. But I I feel like I neglected what's your role with data core?
So I run field operations for data core. I'm an old Tech vet been around a long time friend of mine was talking to me about datacore and I was really or actually the open EVs and then the data core the technology really attracted me. I've been part of several Tech revolutions and semiconductors and networking and I looked at this and thought holy smoke we can take out about 80% of the Iowa latency.
Yeah that's worth doing. I'll go play with that and I'll go work on that. So that's why I'm here.
Absolutely. Thank you. What did you see, you know like you I've been been around the block a little bit my Southern I've seen several waves, right?
You would think a company like data court 20 25 years old, you know, they see a new wave. They see some new technology and what they try to do is take their existing technology in maybe shift and lift right? You guys didn't that's no no, they looked at that and then they realize that they needed something that was perfectly new right?
You need some build for this native. One of the things that's attracted me to data course some of the talent they have right and so our chief scientists Nick Connelly has just been a joy to work with and he's one of the people who saw wait a minute. We really need to do this differently than we were doing with sand Symphony or swarm.
We need to do something new and he's been very instrumental in helping steer the open EBS open source code to where it needs to be for. He's been in storage for a long time and When Nick Smiles, you know things are going well good. No, it's all good.
You know what but this is there's a business case to be made too about you got a company like datacore 20 years ago. They weren't using open source pretty much right to make that switch because these my two cents it's open source that powers this whole, you know, you people can't see because they're only seeing this but there's a big show floor out here hundred plus companies. I bet 7,000 people here 11,000 people online open sources kind of the energy source right for this.
So both of our both our chief product officer. I'm a G day and our CEO Dave zubrowski have both seen that Embrace that and so we're taking a very different task it is today for doing that right? Because sometimes old dogs have to learn new tricks and these guys are doing it.
Well, you know, it's been really fun to work very cool and it's good to see because you know, one of the things is you look out here and look a lot of the names on these boots. They're not 25 years old. No, no, no, not at all.
You know, they some of them you may or may not have heard from before or you who knows in three years data course a company. That'll be here. And so seeing you know, an old guard company adopting this new technology more than adopting embracing innovating.
That's that bodes. Well, I think for the whole the whole movement if you will. Yeah, so we're driving we're driving with that, right?
Yeah many the nice part about having a little gray hair is people have seen these are having area at all. But go ahead. No, but it's you've got people who have seen this stuff before and so like I was sitting down with one of our essays from Germany and we were looking at a problem with the customers is having their implementing our stuff and he's kind of just sitting and looking at it for a minute.
There's left him alone because I know there's a lot going on in there and he just pointed at it. It turned out to be a problem in their infrastructure. We were able to help him with right and Alex just said, hey look this is you know, let's try this and it'll work, you know, so it's a that there's a lot to that just that depth of experience and being able to translate that to the next environment.
