Automating Kubernetes Resource Management with Guy Baron at KubeCon Europe 2025

My next guest is part of that great community of companies and, uh, people going on down there. I want to introduce you to Guy Barone. Yep.

Guy is with a company called Scale Ops and he's gonna tell us all about it. Guy, welcome to Tech Stroke tv. Thanks, Alan.

Thank you for having me. My pleasure. So, guy, before we talk scale ops and cloud native, let's hear about the Guy Barone story.

Alright. The guy, brown story. Well, um, the Guy Barone story starts, uh, as a, you know, with a, with a young boy, uh, getting his first, uh, uh, computer, um, in Apple two.

Um, you know, trying to figure out how he can, uh, program his way, uh, around different limitations of, uh, computer games. He had, uh, Like many of us, Like many of us. So, uh, you know, I'm a, I'm a, I'm a PC boy.

I, I, I was fascinated, uh, by programming computers from, uh, early on. Uh, and I've been fascinated, uh, with building useful tools, uh, using software ever since. So, I'm a software engineer, um, know, I've been doing professionally, uh, software development for over, uh, 25 years now.

Um, currently I'm the co-founder and CTO of, uh, scale ops. Um, my, you know, number one passion and interest is, is building, uh, software that's, uh, useful, uh, for, for people. That's al that always fascinates me.

Uh, you know, I'm a techie. I like, I love programming languages, uh, distributed, uh, systems. I programmed, uh, different systems, uh, across multiple domains, be it retail, e-commerce, uh, website building and, and many others.

So I'm a software engineer, techie at heart, and I build software. You're talking to your people here, so it's all Good. So, guy, scale ups, tell us the story behind scale ups.

Yeah, Scale ups, um, well, scale UPS was born out of, out of, uh, you know, a, a, a pain that, uh, both I experienced when I was, you know, managing hundreds of microservices on, uh, production clusters and my co-founders, uh, uh, frustration with, you know, sizing and, and, and managing resources on, you know, Kubernetes. Uh, so we decided to solve, uh, that problem and, and found scale offs and to develop, you know, a automated resource management platform that will help DevOps teams, SRE teams, engineering teams, uh, to better manage and automate their resource, uh, uh, request and allocations. Uh, so that's what we do.

It translates into significant, uh, cost savings for our users and customers. Uh, and that's what we do at Scale Ops. Absolutely.

Uh, and there's a lot of, uh, new kind of features and, uh, and packed, uh, that we packed onto the product, uh, that's new and we're excited to kind of share those, uh, with, uh, with, uh, the CubeCon audience and have a conversation.

Absolutely. Yeah. It's a good place to have a conversation.

It is. Uh, I know it's only day one of the, of the, uh, expo floor being open, but yesterday was a big day with all the satellite conferences and everything. What have You been hearing from people?

So it's, it's, it's interesting. I think, uh, we're hearing obviously in our kind of, uh, specific domains. Uh, we're, we're interacting with a lot of platform teams, a sorry, teams, DevOps teams that are, you know, uh, trying to, uh, manage, uh, uh, cost optimization, uh, uh, initiatives that they're, uh, running, how they manage resources, uh, so having a lot of, uh, um, you know, interesting conversations on, on those topics.

A lot of multi-cloud hybrid type of, uh, deployments, uh, being on-prem and, and, uh, and, uh, managed cloud. That's always interesting. Obviously, ai, now we could see kind of, uh, how, you know, AI is powering and changing the way software is being created, you know, and, and how it's accelerating software creation and how that translates into, you know, more demand for Kubernetes, how that evolves, you know, uh, microservice architecture.

So a lot of different conversations on those topics. Fascinating. A lot of, you know, the crowd here is really educated.

It's, you know, the top tier of, you know, our industry and fascinating conversations. Do you do CubeCon in North America too? Yeah, we, we do.

We do. We actually do both CubeCon, both, uh, north America. And Let me ask you a question, and just between you and I, Yeah, what do You see as the biggest difference between CubeCon and Europe and CubeCon and North America?

Well, it's interesting. You know, I, I, um, I expected to, well, obviously there's a lot of, uh, um, uh, you know, the, the, the crowd here is more, uh, European based, obviously. Yeah.

But, uh, I, I'm surprised to see a lot of, uh, folks from, uh, north America coming for, for, uh, from, uh, cube, uh, Europe as well. I think, you know, the, the, the, the differences is, is isn't the nuances, but the core is the same. You know, uh, I think the, the, that's part of the beauty of our, you know, community and industry that it kind of, you know, keeps everyone together, whether you're, uh, uh, from North America, from, from the US or from, you know, Tel Aviv, uh, the technology platform that Kubernetes provides, and the use cases that it enables is similar across the board.

So I think the differences in maybe the, the, the, the nuances of the conversation. So you get to see different cultures, and it's, uh, interesting. Absolutely.

What, what I always find, not, not odd, but interesting, is that the European coupons are actually bigger than the North American ones in terms of how many people, yeah, They're Close, but Europe's bigger and, and, um, I think it talks to open source. We all use open source. 99% of companies use open source, but I think open source systems are more favored Yeah.

In Europe, where in America, they'll, they'll use whatever no, they could use. Yeah. Where here, I think that's a stronger preference for open Source.

Yeah, that's an, that's an interesting, uh, observation. Um, yeah, I, I think, I think there, there, there's a lot of, uh, uh, you know, uh, uh, significant, uh, open source, uh, uh, projects originating from, uh, from Europe, uh, Linux, uh, you know, obviously one of them. Uh, and, and, and yeah, the, the crowd here and, and the conversation, uh, is favoring open source.

But I think as well, um, you know, eventually teams have, you know, uh, uh, jobs to get done, and they're looking kind of to, to get the both, uh, the, the best of both worlds. So if they, you know, as, as you mentioned, everyone's using, uh, we all use, uh, open source and, uh, and I think teams are looking to leverage both open source and commercial, uh, uh, products to, you know, eventually benefit their users and, and their, their, uh, organizations and their communities. Absolutely.
