Hi again, everyone. Here are the headlines from May 25th. First up, the US Surgeon General has issued a warning stating that there is insufficient evidence to deem social media safe for Childrens and teenagers, Dr.
De Vivek Murphy urged tech companies, parents and caregivers to take a media action in protecting young people. The warning called on tech companies to share data, enhance transparency with researchers in the public, and prioritize user health and safety in their product design. The Surgeon General's report exposed internal studies by meta showing the adverse effects of Instagram on teen mental health, including body image issues and eating disorders.
Dr. Murphy e emphasized that more research is needed, but there's already ample evidence indicating the profound risk of harm social media, pos to the wellbeing of young people. Next Meta has sold a popular animated GIF search engine Giffy to Shutterstock for 53 million, A significant decrease from the 400 million it paid for the acquisition just three years ago.
The sale comes after the UK competition's watchdog reissued in order to meta citing competition concerns and requesting the divestiture of gfi. The competition in markets authority or CMA initially ordered the sale in November of 2021, and Meta had previously pledged to make GFI openly available to other social networks upon its acquisition. However, the CMAs investigation revealed potential harm to competition in the social media and advertising sectors leading the regulatory intervention.
This marks the first time the CMA has blocked a deal involving a major Silicon Valley company. This being said, medi platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, will retain access to GIF's, ex extensive content as part of the deal. In other news, apple has announced a multi-billion dollar agreement with Broadcom to utilize domestically manufactured chips.
The partnership involves the development of 5G radio frequency components by Broadcom, which will be designed and produced in various US facilities, including a major factory in fourth Collins, Colorado. As an existing supplier of wireless components to Apple, Broadcom generates a substantial portion of its revenue from the iPhone manufacturer, and while the specific financial details were not disclosed, the deal ensures ample manufacturing capacity and resources to meet apples chip needs. Tim Cook's Apples CEO stressed the company's dedication to investing in the US economy and emphasized the importance of technology engineered and manufactured within the country.
Additionally, the agreement is expected to support over 1,100 jobs at the Broadcoms Fort Collins facility. Next up, BT group, a UK telecom company, has announced plans to cut up to 55,000 jobs by the end of the decade with a focus on implementing artificial intelligence to replace some of the roles. Bt, which currently employs around 130,000 workers, including staff and contractors, aims to reduce its employee count between 75,000 and 90,000 by 2030, according to its latest earnings report, BT plans to eliminate approximately 10,000 jobs through digitization Automation, integration of AI into its processes.
Additionally, the company intends to cut 15,000 jobs related to building fiber optic broadband and 5G mobile networks, as well as 10,000 jobs in servicing and maintenance. The ceo, Phillip Jensen emphasized the role of technology and enhancing efficiency, stating that the technology would allow them to operate more effectively. The company also highlighted the benefits of newer and more flexible equipment alongside with AI and data in creating self-healing networks.
