Hi again, everyone here the headlines for February 21st. First up the US Supreme Court will listen to arguments today and tomorrow about two important cases related to online speech and content moderation. The focus of these discussions will be about section 230 a federal law that has received criticism from both parties, but tech companies and digital rights organizations consider essential for the internet as we know it.
The court rules against the tech industry and narrow section 230's legal protections for websites and social media companies. This could lead to online platforms being exposed to a range of new lawsuits regarding how they present content to users. Section 230 was enacted in 1996 during the early days of the world wide web and recognized that the internet was in its early stages and that website owners risked being sued for things that other people posted which could stifle development.
The US Supreme Court is considering whether to take on additional cases that could have implications for Section 230 and members of Congress have shown renewed interest in scaling back the laws protections for websites. So we have to stay tuned to see how this all plays out. Next this past weekend Twitter announced that users must pay for its Subscription Service Twitter blue or lose access to text message base to factor authentication a popular security feature.
A pop-up notification notified users that if they don't pay the monthly fee, they will be locked out of their account starting on March 19th until they remove the security feature. Twitter suggested users. Try alternative Security Options such as authentication apps or security keys that offer additional security Beyond just the password.
Twitter is stated that it's decision to limit the security features Twitter blue subscribers is intended to reduce misuse by Bad actors. However, this comes as just another one of Twitter's most recent initiatives to maximize earnings at the company through Twitter blue which provides users with access to a verification service previously only available to celebrities journalists and other well known individuals. In other news Ohio State University has received a donation of 110 million dollars to establish a software Innovation Center that aims to make Ohio State Columbus in the midwest the new high-tech hub.
The donation comes from the timer Family Foundation and is the largest gift in the University's history. The center for software Innovation will bring together Ohio State's College of Engineering College of Business. In other partners to offer endowed professorships academic offerings in Industry experience for students.
Additionally, the center will also catalyze technology Investments and advancements across the region. Ohio state is hopeful in a stated that the new center is well positioned for Success given the rapid pace of technological advancement and development. Next up Joseph James O'Connor a British citizen accused of taking part in cyber attacks, including the high profile Twitter hack of public figures such as Joseph Biden Barack Obama and Bill Gates is set to be extra added from Spain to the US.
The national Court of Spain has agreed to O'Connor's extradition to the US where he faces 14 charges including illegal access to computer systems internet fraud money laundering and extortion. O'Connor who's accused of hacking around 130 Twitter accounts was arrested in the coastal town of estepona Spain in July 2021. This being said the extradition order can still be appealed.
