Techstrong News Recap – August 30, 2022
On August 30, William Willis covered Meta’s proposed settlement with regard to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, NASA’s scrubbed Artemis 1 launch and Microsoft’s collaboration with ByteDance on AI software. He also talked about LG and Honda’s partnership to produce EV batteries and Google’s new cross-device software development kit. Hi again, everyone here the headlines for August 30th. First up meta has proposed to settle a long run in privacy class action lawsuit related to the Cambridge analytica Scandal the suit which accused Facebook of illegally sharing user data with Cambridge analytica husband stuck in Discovery for the past four years due to legal troubles. That being said a filing was submitted on Friday, which asks the judge to put the class action on hold for 60 days until the lawyers for both Facebook and the plaintiffs complete a written settlement.
The size of the proposed settlement has not yet been disclosed. Next NASA scrubbed yesterday's Artemis 1 launch the first mission in its program to get humans on the moon Again by 2025 on accounts of an engine setback after a weather delay technical difficulties arose during the fuel loading stage and a T minus 40 minutes. The team was unable to get past an engine bleed.
NASA plans to launch during the backup window that opens on Friday September 2nd at 12:48 PM Eastern Time. If the launch is successful, the mission will ask for 39 days and will Splash down in the ocean on October 11th. In other news Microsoft and byte dance are collaborating on an AI project.
Engineers from both companies recently announced that they are working together on a software intended to help companies more efficiently run AI apps on multiple computers. While companies often times partner up and share resources to contribute to open source projects this partnership emerges from a time where there's a growing rivalry between the US and China as far as Ai and intellectual properties concerned. However, this is not the first time that Microsoft and by dance have sought to work together in 2020 Microsoft briefly talked with bite dance on acquiring tiktok.
4 billion dollars in a joint venture in the US to produce batteries for Honda's electric vehicles. The joint venture is set up to be later this year in construction of the plant is expected to begin in early 2023. The plant will produce batteries exclusively for Honda vehicles assembled in North America.
With demand for electric vehicles expected to grow from concerns about climate change pollution and increasing gas prices Honda is just another one of the world's automobile makers looking to bolster up as EV lineups. Next up Google has announced a new cross-device software development kit that contains tools to make apps play across Android devices and eventually non Android devices including tablets TVs and cars. The software development kit is meant to let developers discover nearby devices established secure connections and host the apps experience across multiple devices.
According to Google the kit uses a combination of Wi-Fi Bluetooth in ultra-wideband Technologies to deliver these functionalities. Currently the kit is only available and have developer preview and works with Android phones and tablets, but it will eventually support other devices including non-android operating systems. LastPass revealed that hackers stole part of its source code and that announcement raised several concerns about the lack of oversight and transparency of these type of companies.
