Hi again, everyone here the headlines for August 18th. First up in the news. It seems like social media companies are taking a different approach to the upcoming US midterm elections.
Tiktok recently announced that it will be helping that will be launching an election center to help people find voting locations as well as fact-checking and banning political advertisements. Meanwhile platforms such as meta and Twitter are keeping in line with what was implemented in the 2020 voting season one that was riddled with controversies and conspiracies. With the different approaches, it'll be interesting to see how misinformation and controversy affects this voting season.
Next up Amazon workers from Warehouse in Upstate New York have filed for a union election. Petition was filed for a warehouse known as Al B1 approximately 10 miles Southeast of Albany. This pushed toward unionizing his backed up by the same Grassroots labor group that secured the first union labor labor victory of Amazon warehouse in Staten Island.
This petition comes from recent scrutiny of Amazon's treatment of its warehouse workers. We'll have to wait and see how this plays out as more and more workers are filing for unions and fighting for their rights. Next in the news tencent the 370 billion dollar Chinese Tech Giant has posted its first ever Revenue decline.
The 10 cent missed its both revenue and profit forecast for the quarter as well. China's recent restrictions and regulations regarding video games has impacted tencent as gaming makes up a third of its Revenue. Additionally, the researchants of covid in China has slowed down the economy with lockdowns.
This is called caused revenue from fintech and business services to grow less than expected. However tencent is stated that it expects. Its earnings to pick back up as the Chinese economy begins to recover.
In other news American Airlines has agreed to buy 20 supersonic Jets and put down a deposit on planes that are still in the drawing board. American Airlines will become the second airline to plan on using supersonic planes with the United Airlines making a similar announcement last year for 15. Supersonic planes failed to catch on 20 years ago in spite of its fast flight time due to prices for both passengers and Airlines being too high.
However, boom supersonic the maker of these supersonic planes and since that when the planes debut Airlines will be able to run them profitably. Airline companies are expected to start using supersonic planes in 2029, but we'll have to wait and see if this Innovation catches on. Next Airbnb will be rolling out anti-party technology in the US and Canada.
This technology will examine the renters history how far they live from the home. They want to rent and how long they are renting among other factors. Airbnb says the technology is designed to prevent a request from ever reaching the host of a party.
This technology has already been tested in Australia where dropped unauthorized Parties by 35% This measure is in large part due to Growing pressure to clamp down on parties since 2019.
