Techstrong News Recap – August 15, 2022
On August 15, Natan Solomon covered Facebook’s plans to bring end-to-end encryption to its messenger chat platform and the FCC’s rejection of Elon Musk’s Starlink subsidy’s request to expand rural internet access. He also talked about Amazon’s launch of its AWS private 5G internet service, the Disney Plus price increase and South Korea’s pardon of Samsung Electronics vice chairman Jay Y. Lee. Finally, he previewed articles from Security Boulevard, DevOps.Com and Container Journal, which discuss the Open Cybersecurity Schema Framework, Cycode’s addition of static application security testing and a new type of cryptojacking attack.

Hi again, everyone here the headlines for August 15th. First Facebook announced an update on its plans to bring an end-to-end encryption to its messenger chat platform. Starting this week Facebook has begun testing this feature with a small group of people with plans to roll out end-to-end encryption as the default for all chats in 2023.
Currently messenger offers end to end on a perchat basis, but these are only used by those who are conscious of delicate security needs. And then encryption would provide a layer of security to the over 1 billion people who use messenger worldwide. So this would be a big transformation to say the least.
Next the FCC has decided to reject Elon musk's Starling subsidy to expand rural internet access on the ground because it failed to meet program requirements. The FCC determined that starlink could not deliver the promise Service as it initially applied for the 896 million dollars subsidy back in 2020 LTD Broadband Broadband. 3 billion dollar subsidy.
As rural internet access continues to fall behind leaving many Americans disconnected. It'll be interesting to see which company takes on this initiative next. Another Tech Giant making headlines is Amazon, which launched AWS private 5G a service that allows companies to deploy their own private 5G Networks.
AWS rolled out the service to customers in Ohio North Virginia and Oregon with plans to roll it out internationally in the near future. Companies can order hardware and SIM cards directly from AWS and AWS will provide all the necessary software and apis needed to set up private mobile networks. However, AWS only supports the creation of 4G LTE networks currently and it will support 5G in the future to give low latency and predictable levels of throughput.
In other news Disney has announced price increases starting in December for its popular streaming service Disney Plus. This was announced alongside the introduction of an ad-supported tier with the same price customers are currently paying. This will be the second price increase for Disney plus since it was released in 2019.
The move is similar to other streaming services which have increased prices and released ad supported tiers. With so much competition amongst streaming services companies are looking for ways to make the economics of streaming viable as prices are kept artificially low to compete against rivals. Pardon JY Lee Vice chairman of Samsung Electronics Lee was the company's de facto leader since his father suffered a heart attack back in 2014, but was charged with bribery back in 2017. Lee was released from prison in August of 2021, but wouldn't be able to work for Samsung for five years under Korean law. Leah's been an unregistered director, but as part of may now allow him to take control of Samsung this isn't part of an effort by the Korean government to overcome the current economic crisis and we'll have to wait and see if any other dominoes fall as part of this initiative.

At blackcat USA 2022 AWS Splunk and IBM launched the framework with the intent to address interoperability and it has received support from several cybersecurity venues.
