Techstrong News Recap – April 25, 2023
On April 25, William Willis covered SpaceX’s first launch of its Starship, Microsoft’s plans to buy a $50 million land parcel in Wisconsin from Foxconn to build a data center and Facebook’s $725 million settlement fund opening for U.S. user claims. Hi again, everyone here. The headlines are April 25th. First up SpaceX has achieved a significant Milestone by successfully launching the Foley sacked version of its Starship for the first time during the launch last week the vehicle had a successful liftoff and Ascent through the crucial maxq period however, the launch encountered issue when the first stage did not separate from the upper stage as intended in the upper stage did not light up its own engines additionally three of the boosters Raptor engines may not have fired as noted by SpaceX.
Unfortunately the flight concluded with an explosion which destroyed the vehicle. Although this was intentional a SpaceX has set the flight path over an area cleared of human presence for safety reasons. Despite the anomaly SpaceX considers the test success as the primary goal was to gather crucial data about the vehicle for future orbital flights.
Spacex's stated that the team would view anything beyond the initial launch as a win. The company plans to release more information about the flight and its outcomes as it conducts further investigations. Next in southeastern Wisconsin Microsoft has agreed to purchase a 50 million dollar land parcel that was originally intended for Foxconn manufacturing facility.
Instead Microsoft is planning to construct a 1 billion dollar data center on the 315 acre piece of land in Mount Pleasant. While it is unclear how many people the data center will employ Microsoft has stated that such centers employ usually around 300 to 400 people. The land parcel is part of a tax increment financing District that includes the Foxconn campus in property taxes collected in these districts can be used to support the development.
Foxconn 80 Mount Pleasant officials in purchasing the land for the district with 60 million dollars and the proceeds from the sale of the land to Microsoft will be received by Foxconn as a partial reimbursement of what is paid for originally back in 2017. Fox counter previously declared its intention to build a 10 billion dollar facility amount Pleasant that would provide employment for 13,000 people but the company did not fulfill its promises in other news Facebook's parent company meta has agreed to pay $725 million dollars to settle a lawsuit that claimed the social media platform allowed Cambridge analytica to access the personal data of millions of users anyone who's can had a Facebook account and the United States since May 24th of 2007 can apply for a portion of the settlement amount but it's unclear how much each person will receive since the amount will be split up amongst all valid claims. Users can submit a form online or VIA mail to apply for the settlement.
This lawsuit originally arose after revelations in 2018 that Cambridge analytica paid Facebook app Developers for access to the personal information of roughly 87 million users, which is then utilized to Target American voters during the 2016 election. Next up the European Union has approved its first comprehensive set of regulations for issuing and trading crypto assets including Bitcoin. The regulations will be implemented in mid 2024 and firms involved in crypto asset trading and issuance will be required to acquire licenses from National regulators.
The licenses will allow them to provide services across the 27 country block using a passport. Major crypto asset service providers must disclose their energy consumption, too. The EU is also implemented new rules to trace crypto asset transfers requiring information on both the source and the recipient of the asset to be recorded on both sides of the transfer to prevent money laundering.
Additionally transactions over a thousand Euros from a self-hosted wallet or crypto address of a private user will also be subject to this tracing rule. The EU has expressed hope that these regulations would serve as a model for other countries to for developing proper policies when it comes to crypto. com.
