Join Alan Shimel, CEO of Techstrong Group, as he explores AI adoption in video creation. From intelligent editing to content personalization, AI is transforming how we watch, create, and share video online.
Will AI make video smarterโor just more overwhelming?

Hey everyone, it's Shimmy and you're listening to another Shimmy says, you know, I wanted to talk today a little bit about AI and video. Couple of things. First of all, as it regards to video, as someone who started a company almost 12 years ago to develop websites with written articles 12 years ago, I didn't realize the full impact that video would have, but the numbers bear it out today.
Today's audiences really don't wanna read very much. They don't wanna read very long articles or, or content unless it's really dead on to something that they're very, very interested in. And then they're actively investigating.
More and more people want to ingest their content via video. And more and more people wanna ingest their content via short videos. So you have more people watching videos, let's say, on TikTok or YouTube than you do watching Netflix movies or something like that, because they like their videos shorter.
Um, now it could be that, you know, you, they don't pay for YouTube shorts or, or TikTok, and you do have to pay for, let's say, streaming video. But the fact of the matter is, people like their videos shorter and they, like, they prefer video content over, let's say, written content. Um, and we we're seeing this have ripple effects, not through just the entertainment industry, but through marketing content, marketing technology and everything else.
Um, by the same token, AI is having a huge effect on ever outsized effect on how we're doing video. Just like I didn't think video would be as important as it was 12 years ago, seven years ago, I didn't think AI would be this important in how we are creating video. ai, on how AI is increasing its grip on video.
And I read the article and we dis we discussed it, uh, on, on Text Drunk Gang. And the the interesting thing is we hear at Techstrong or living proof of what we're seeing in there, right? What, what we're seeing is that, um, more and more we're using video for our marketing, not just marketing, but for our communication.
It's our communication medium of choice. It's even true. Think about how many Zoom videos or teams videos or WebEx that you're doing, or a Google Meet, right?
We, we prefer meeting that way than just a plain telephone call. Audio all of a sudden is just not rich enough, right? And, and so we prefer video, but when we're using video to create this content, or when we, we, when we are creating video content, we are increasingly using ai.
We're using AI throughout the entire process from a pre-production point of view. We're using AI to create the scripts and score and storyboards and messaging enhance the, the scripting and storyboard and me messaging, making it punchier, making it more on point, keeping it more on brand, uh, just across the board in, in preparing to shoot the video, AI is helping us make our videos sharper. Then in post-production, the use of AI is just through the roof.
The initial point was, you know, use AI for, for closed captioning, right? For transcribing, as the, as I'm talking, you are seeing the words on the screen here, screen here, right? That's being done by AI automatically, according to the article that John Schwartz wrote and survey, recent survey had that the use of that has increased over 500% in the last two, three years.
It's crazy, right? But people like having their videos with the words playing on the bottom because they don't always have their audio on if they're watching on their phone or what have you. They just read the words along with the video.
So you'd say, well, what do you need the video for? 'cause you're just reading the words anyway. No.
They like seeing the person talk, even if they don't hear 'em and reading the words along, just like you may be doing right now. Uh, think about that for a second. Let that sink in.
Other uses of AI and post-production is, look, I'll be talking for about 10 minutes today if they can shut me up in time, but you don't wanna listen to 10 minutes of shimmy today, but you might be watching this on YouTube shorts or TikTok, or within a little LinkedIn promo later on, and you're only getting 30 or 45 seconds of it. Well, guess what? AI is giving you that 35 or 45 seconds of it.
It's taking the entire, uh, 10 minute video and saying, okay, you didn't want a one minute summary. Here's your one minute summary. You want a 32nd crack at it?
Here's 30 seconds, and it mixes the matches so that that one minute, two minute or 30 seconds or whatever timeframe you want is the, gives you the essence of the video or hopefully enough that'll make you click through to, to watch the entire video, right? And so another great use of of AI in, in terms of editing the video, um, you know, I tell we, we have a full AV team here at Techstar full-time, five people full-time doing video editing and creating and so forth. I've been telling them now this for probably a year or two, that ai either they've gotta embrace AI and be 10 times more effective with what we're doing, or they'll be replaced by ai.
None of them have been replaced. They're all taking courses and learning to use AI to make themselves better. Well, almost all of them.
But anyway, um, I think, you know, one of the knocks we're hearing on AI in general today is, well, AI is not doing as fast as we thought it was. It's not, it's not, it's not replacing people. Show me who's been replaced by ai.
Show me where AI has really made a difference. I think this is one area where AI has really made a difference. I think if you talk to marketing people, they will tell you they're putting more and more of their budgets into video.
They're increasing their budgets in video, and they are also really relying on AI to make their videos more compelling, more effective, farther reaching, better marketing. It's not just marketing though, whether you are going, you're watching videos on TikTok or YouTube shorts, as I said, or on, on your TV or what, however you consume video. AI is having an effect through rippling through that entire video ecosystem.
And, and, you know, back to watching people watching shorter videos, here's an interesting phenomenon, right? People go on TikTok or YouTube shorts, they don't watch one short video. They're still spending a tremendous amount of time watching the video, but they, they just like, they doom scroll their videos.
And so it's, it's crazy when you think about, you know, they say, I wanna watch shorter videos, but I wanna watch more of them. And, and, but again, this is the market. And so people producing video content today, I don't care whether you are a, a, uh, marketer or a a, you know, a producer or some sort of influencer.
These are the, the realities of the world we're living. You've got to use AI to make your videos more effective. I see we have, it looks like a Veronica asked the question, unfortunately, I can't read it.
I'm so far away from the monitor here, but, but I thank you for joining in with that. But, um, this is, this is the new world we're, we're faced with. I, I personally embrace it because I, I think, you know, we here at Textron, we jumped on the AI wagon, probably I had said of Covid, and we've been doing more and more with video.
Well, we jumped on the video wagon at the outset of Covid. We've been doing more and more with video and AI though, over the last year, and I see huge results from it. So I think everyone should be doing it.
I think we all are. And I think it's an excellent example of no, AI isn't gonna throw people out their jobs. No ai right?
Is not, is not that. But is AI absolutely changing the game? Absolutely.
So you are watching this and this is AI enhanced, and until next time, this is shimmy for Shimmy says.
