This is texturing TV. Hey everyone. We're back here live in Amsterdam for kubecon cloud nativecon.

10,000 people it's buzzing unlike passcube cons. I have said this earlier. You know student let me first introduce students and we're gonna talk about it Stu miniman.

He needs no introduction actually on our show Sue's long time host over it the cube and then went over to the Dockside it red hat right you and I've known each other for years and this is the first time we've actually been together on campus Sharon notes or drink on the side here and everything. So I think thank you so much great for having me. Yeah, great Community.

Look the sun is shining. The flowers are in bloom and the state of open sources strong, so wrong Stew you've been at Red Hat two years. Yeah what I your official title.

Yeah for the round, right? So I'm the director of Market Insight. So I'm part of the openshift business unit, which of course is, you know, big piece of what we're talking about red hat is the cloud native ecosystem.

We are heavily involved in so many of the projects and communities here. We had, you know, five minute keynote this morning, you know, big Booth, you know, obviously Red Hats been involved since you know, the Inception of kubernetes and all of these projects the whole thing the whole Cloud native and And you know, we look at red hat and there's IBM too. And you know, IBM is IBM's the biggest contributor Linux and and to everything else.

So when you take this IBM red hat conglomerate I mean, they're a big big plank in the open source Community Support. Yeah, I mean Alan you you and I are old enough to remember when you know, IBM put a billion dollars into Linux. Remember, you know over two decades ago.

I you know when another company said their products not done to lendix is dead. Yeah. Yeah, and hey, come on Microsoft's a great partner.

Now that half of azures running on Linux servers. Absolutely. We know the joke Allen Allen.

What is the cloud made up of him Clinic mostly Linux servers? Yeah. So yeah the joke it is but back to what I was saying before I rudely didn't introduce you.

We've got 10,000 people here and unlike their last several. Kubecon's the boots are closer together again. You get the feeling of buzz you get that feeling of wow.

This is a vibrant happening Community. Yeah, and you know what, I believe 58% of the attendees are first attendees. Yes at the show.

Um, yeah. And as you said like when we first opened the show floor today, I mean there was a bar and energy in Detroit like the show forward empty out for like hours at a time. It's been a good Evan flow here.

So okay day one still everybody's got a lot of energy and I think it's gonna have too much the other thing though to be fair. It's not that Detroit was a bad Cuban. It was actually I think six or seven thousand people but because of covid they they spread out the boots more and just the layout of how things had to be done.

Right? We're not as conducive for the Xbox here lunches in here and there's things here and as you said, right It's tighter activity. I mean, it's not a small venue by any means.

Well, it's Tighter and so you feel that more more energy and I guess that means with officially past covid. Is that fair to you say, oh boy. I'm not even gonna touch it not go in there.

I I you're not qualified. Hope so I I know that the cncf actually has you know on staff. No, I thought somebody to Monitor and track that was a little personally worried that you know, when the Dutch government said like hey, you can't test or require vaccinations.

Everybody's a little concerned and there's some people that might not have come from it. But boy, I mean you heard there's a wait list of over 2000 people that didn't get to come to this that might want it. It didn't affect.

Um, so far lots of good interactions and yeah great energy here. I don't know if you get into it. Yeah.

I don't know if it's different from Europe to us, but I just don't see it here. But and any event. Still we we got into a little bit you guys had a five-minute keynote this morning.

Yeah. Yeah. I heard an interesting fact.

I don't know if was today or yesterday that openshift is now like by far the largest distro for Coupe. Yeah. So if first of all, you know, when I joined red hat I felt the red hat had built a product unlike anything else in the space because while openshift starts with kubernetes, it is really a lot more for whole platform and there's lots of different ways to measure it but you know, you you mentioned our power and organization IBM.

I can only talk about financial things when they share it. So when IBM CFO on the Q4 earning shared that openshifted surpassed a billion dollars of annual recurring Revenue, so nice miles shown we all knew when we hit it but it's exciting to be able to share that with the part about it and definitely, you know, it's great to talk about code and our contribution and our thousands of customers, but at the end of day off so you say like, hey who makes money off open source and And how to write that was always the like The Shining child of that right? They were close and and we know that we support a lot in the community and we contribute back and you know, we do have a profitable business that runs off of and that's what we're doing.

Absolutely, you know, but one of the things especially for our people at home Stu Cloud native is so much more than kubernetes today and so is openshift. Yeah, right. So yes kubernetes is in there.

Yes Cooper 90s and sort of Baseline now, but there's so much more to Cloud native. There's so much more to open shift if you wouldn't mind share with our audience. Beyond coupon ready Alan happy to it's something I I talk about all the time, but for it cncf says they have 159 projects.

Openshift itself has over 50 projects that make up what we make up where we either some of them did we start the project but most of them we are a significant contributor. We sit on, you know, the board of it or we've given significant code contributions. So, you know somewhere probably that that's the people aspects.

Yeah. Yeah mate could the maintenance, you know, here's the Dirty Little Secret. He's open source projects don't go off by themselves.

Yeah, you need maintainers. You need people contributing code. You need people testing.

Yeah. Yeah eat our eyes aren't open source is people. Right?

Right. So we actually have rights. I loved in the opening keynote when I watched the cncf going through and they're going through it's like, oh there's our go CD.

Absolutely that's part of our get-up story and what we're doing. Oh, you know, where's some of the cool expanding things like backstage? We made a statement last year that we are actively engaged in participating and we'll see where that leads down the road to what we're doing so many Says, you know istio has been hot at this show for years.

It's part of the back, you know for a while. It was on the outside looking in. But now if you guys have the hype cycle things down so you already but and there were politics and yeah, let's put the, you know, our friends at Google, you know, created kubernetes, they created istio and they created knative you and I both heard both contributors and customers that were hesitant around the governance of it until it became not just kind of Google run.

But yeah Google Google still top contributor for a lot of these projects, but it's more open and how we're doing things. I'm glad you brought this up. Yeah, because this is really something that IBM pioneered and it's something that red hat has capitalized not even before the IBM actuation and that is the realization of you know, the rising tide lifts all boats, right if we all if Google and IBM and Microsoft An AWS and named the big tech company that meta if you could all cooperate to create a foundation that we all can build on and then everyone, you know, the powers of evolution will all build in different ways.

But that Foundation is solid because of that call it co-opetition or whatever you want. It it benefits the whole ecosystem and not just the big guys. Yeah it you know, you look around.

I don't know if you went over and you can't see us at home. But if you go on the other side of this floor on the other side of this wall about 200 feet, there's like smaller companies in stands, you know, you know, and there's also the community Zone that's there so ready. Yes, you know, we've got a bunch of people Staffing that because Most of the people that we send from Red Hat they're either a speaker and/or a contributor because we know many of the main contributors.

That's how you get to be a speaker and you know system or it comes up. Absolutely that's an important part of it. It's not with all due respect.

It's not just the Red Hats. It's not just the Google's it's not just the ibms. It really it's this whole Community this whole well, and I mean Alan one of the areas that you know, I like what the cncf does and it's similar to what we've done a long time at Red Hat.

Is it is that participation for everyone especially the end users. So I I the cncf was highlighting. Oh here are some new members of the community I go through and look at those projects and say remember which ones of these projects came from the end user community.

So I'm back Spade age came from Spotify. Yeah, you know lift brought us a technology and finally see it's here. Look at CD.

Yeah. Yeah, right a lot of Spinnaker. It's a big one, right?

But Fargo came from into it and yeah, it's exactly it still if you don't mind. I want to Pivot a little bit sure red hat in addition to the five-minute keynote did have somebody and by the way, the keynote was about sustainability is what the focus was Project Kepler. So obviously, you know, so we're partnering with, you know, IBM and we've works and Intel are all part of that.

Activity tax will be able to measure how much energy usage the containers right? I got to do a quick plug. Yeah quick plug here on Tech Strunk.

So our sustainability correspondent, we hired a woman named Barney Schneider who's written several books on climate change and was the corresponding that I think if it's MSNBC or CNBC one of them has now started a new series. We're doing called sustainable it or something like that. com.

But we'd love to follow up with you on that. And because that's that's her thing and we're gonna be really focusing in on that good that's good stuff. But there's a bunch of other Red Hat announcements.

Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely.

So many of them Focus around the project work that we're doing. So, for example, we were just talking about the end user Ford Ford Motor Company talks about how they're partnering on the techton, you know project there and it's a really good one for it actually spoken Detroit about how the partnership that they had with. Yeah, of course, we actually had a Ford Mach e right part of our Cube by example activity Ford actually come to us and said we help them double the people that knew containers and Cloud native just by the free resources that we had and they brought a Ford Mark E that we got to drive around and do some interviews there.

So the partnership we help forward in their journey to be part of the community more and participate in the techton project. So they Aired what they're doing there. It's funny.

We've actually got Audi here. We've got an Audi electric e-tron that's driving around with the cube by example again doing interviews with some customers and contributors in that space too. The kubecon project had two new tracks that got released for this week.

One of them is around Cube vert and the other ones around nodejs. So Cube vert project. I'm sure you're aware of you know, how do we fit?

You know, what what happens to Virtual machines? We all know no technology ever dies or goes away. So how do we Embrace virtual machines bring them into the cloud native management and orchestration environment doesn't mean I have to go all containers or throw out my VMS, but some will modernize some will you know refactor but some I'll just keep them as virtual machines for a long time.

And another update that we had is around the conveyor project. So it's a series of tools to analyze and help you understand how to which applications I have. Are they suitable for replatforming or refactoring?

I love it. Just we went through those pretty quick. Let's just nail down those projects again as the conveyor project.

Yeah you Burt Hubert. Yeah and tecton. I mentioned tecton and Tech time.

I should mentioned the CDF. Yeah project. Yeah, and you know, we were you know, we were heavily participated in Argo CD which I believe is also CD I if from the CDF standpoint, yeah, and I think it was one other one in between.

Oh God Cube, trying another one with cube in it. Because I was the cube by example is the is the website that I am sorry for Education, which is not a project itself but has lots of information about those people they get it. Yeah.

Yeah, Adam and rapping fire with it. You come on 159 projects. We'll go through all of them there as well as a hundreds of cloud services.

Yeah, we'll be here all day the other the other updates that we have. We have some good blog posts some like surveys we did in the security space obviously security always front and center top of mind. Yeah.

So then now You know, I know the last few shows we've been talking about this career supply chain and you know data out there like more than half of the customers we surveyed it was over 500 that we talked to said that in the last 12 months. They have had an incident in their supply chain. So unfortunately, it's not all that surprising.

We were heavily involved in the Sig sore project to help work on that and feel that we're making as a whole the industry making those pieces better. So that is next week's news. Well, we'll be an already.

Hey, of course handling Deb said, I'm so far as Supply chains that's bombs and all of that good stuff, but it is and and I mean quite frankly another. kind of theme of the whole Cloud native Community is security right the security of whether it's the data data security data Ops applications open source itself, right the whole open ssf thing that the foundation so that the Linux Foundation runs is It's really. I mean it is front center.

It's it's prime time. Yeah, and that you know, that's good for all of us. Yeah.

So what are you doing in your spare time? I did go you and I both got to go see flowers. Yes, we did today that they wonderful Amsterdam is lovely.

I don't really excited to be back after having it canceled on us in 2020. So yeah, we could just can I erase for my memory the last three years? That's why I said the beginning man.

Maybe we're back. Yeah, it could be there. We've got yeah, I mean so much getting ready because oh and when I get back from this show, we're a month away from Red Hat Summit, which of course is our big event Red Hat Summit and ansible Fest is now part of redhead some of it this year for the first time.

So where is redhead somebody it is in Boston? Yeah, so it's Boston and I mean, I'm sure you know, hopefully your other stuff like end of May can't ask for a nicer time. No, it is may and like of course the fall is when you know, I love really there the end of May.
