We're gonna be kicking off our day two coverage here at cloud nativecon cubecon in a beautiful and beautiful but cold Amsterdam yesterday. If you had a chance to catch our stream it was an amazing day.

I think we had about 20 people on covering just us it literally a sold out cubecon is 10,000 people here our first guest today. Let me introduce you to him. His name is Marson Stone Zack.

Welcome to Tech's drug TV. Thanks for being here today. Hello on thank you for the introduction.

Very nice to meet ya. Hello everyone watching this life. So let's first start off with a little bit about yourself, Eric.

What do you what do you do? Hey, so I I'm on engineering manager right at this time. I I work with small logic and what I do is that I work on the open Telemetry offering I want I I work with my team on the open Telemetry collector on the open Telemetry Library.

We we make our collection easy for the customers and based on the industry-wide open Telemetry so that everyone knows how to easily send data to sumo. Actually, excellent. So you mentioned you work at Sumo most of our audience, I think no.

Two more they're familiar, but there might be people who don't or maybe they think of sumo. Oh, yeah, they're sort of a same security play or this or that thing. It may not know exactly all of the aspects of sumo.

What a perk give them a little background if you can sure so some logic is actually a very good platform for many many use cases. One of them is yeah like you mentioned another one is observability. So right now we can collect logs metrics and traces like I I think that everybody in the industry right now, they have to converge and get all the signals all of those types.

And that is one of the reasons why we pushed ourselves towards open Telemetry because it covers everything. So homologic is this platform when you send your data and you have great analytics based of them, so you have alerts. Yeah, you have dashboards.

You have some insights for the future. You can see what was happening, you know in the In the past so and all of that with the beautiful and very very resilient platform and you don't have to you know, spend a lot of money on it. I love it.

I love it. All right, and and before we jump into what I want to talk about, it's Sumo logic calm if anyone wants to go to the website, right? Yes, it's someological exactly.

All right. Now that we've got that out of the way perk to sort of an announcements coming out here at Cloud nativeconcubecon for yesumo. Why don't we if you don't mind sharing with the audience?

So maybe let's start with the first announcement is the predict Operator Operator for the metrics. It is very very similar to the thing that we had previously that was predict operator for locks. So for metrics what you can do you can based on your historical data you could see what is the forecast for your future later.

So for example, let's imagine you monitor your costs for kubernetes cluster. So using the pretty metrics predict operator, you can see what what this course will be in the future also for the logs in this for example, if you have a metric for dogs, you can see what is the forecast for that. It's very very helpful, I guess for for the devil's teams out there.

Absolutely. Absolutely. So, you know whenever I hear a forecaster or predictor I start thinking about AI these days right because everybody's talking about AI is this using some sort of machine learning AI type of Technology those metrics right now are using you they are algebra behind that is Leonard and us on the AI.

Unfortunately. I cannot comment at this point. Okay?

No comment that let's jump into the second announcement. Yes. So we have our second house and a smell as well and it's very well connected with the cubecon that we are here and you you know that before cubecon, we had the code located events.

And one of the collocated events was the observability today. Yes similar logic right now. The announcement is that we are going to be open Telemetry collector native platform.

So whenever you want to collect the data for some You can send them we claim that we will support our customers with for the open Telemetry data collection. So open telemetric collector is our default collector if you want to send data to Sumo you can use other tools, but we tell you that hey you get the best support if you use the open parameter collector also, if you'd like to send the data using the open Telemetry library, for example, we support that as well. And on top of that for the collector part, we make it very very easy actually right now to send those data.

So this is like three real three really easy steps. First of all, you install The Collector then you configure The Collector and then you just send the data with this with this collector and you have the very very nice UI path to do that. So we have like three easy steps.

You just follow the commands which are very actually easy and you're done. You see your data. I love it.

Now. Look, this is a trend we're seeing here at the show right open Telemetry, which is now I think the second largest. Cncf open project.

Maybe yes, it is actually right out right after the kubernetes. Yeah, the industry is really rallying around. This is a standard right?

I mean everyone from sumo logic and several other vendors here, you know, everyone's moving to open Telemetry adds these standard even I I sort of the Yeager team is now feeding into open Telemetry everybody. Is coming to this? Yes.

What's the Sumo logic Special Sauce of to this though? If you in other words, what makes the Sumo logic integration here? Different Center.

Yeah, yeah. Actually, you know, the thing is that what makes us different here is that we say right now with that we want to be native open Telemetry native for the data collection for the open Telemetry itself, which and everybody seems to be around like everybody seems to be on board but not all the companies are there yet and we say that right now hey to our customers that we are pushing towards this and we that is our promise that if you if you use open Telemetry, you can use it as soon I know for example our dashboards in the future will will be deals on the open telemetric collector on the open Telemetry schema. So you don't need to go anymore to our specific documentation because it is good and the information is there but if you have the university standard, you don't have to do it every time you use like different vendors, for example, you use Yeager for one of your spaces, but you want to use Sumo for the other one.

You have the information in the same place because you we use the same schema, so I I think that our differentiator here is our push because right now I think I think we might be one of the biggest user of the open telemetric collector. For example, really dog food the the this binary it works for us. We push a lot a lot of data.

We just did a very very quick calculations. 0 terabytes of data daily. As we have like 12 of those and not only for logs but also for the metrics and for the traces, so we send a lot of data and we use it internally.

We see that it works. We see that using this industry standard is actually very very easy and it's mature enough. It's a mature enough to say that hey, yes.

I think it's it's the time to push. actually I want to make sure I got this right for our team out here. So by being native to open Telemetry, it's not like an API.

Sort of push it. It's truly a native. There is yes, there is a lot of things actually, you know, so open Telemetry native to me personally.

What it means is that you use the use the libraries use the standard you use the open Telemetry source, for example, there is the open telemetric collect protocol called otlp. So every vendor who would like to claim their open telemeternity, they would need to have this as a source. So open Telemetry native means that you use open Telemetry across the whole Telemetry data.

So not not only in on the ingest not on not only on the metadata to ask your data, but also this schema that is useful for this metadata. So for example at Sumo historically we use something that is called Source type for example, so we know internally that our schema was created for a purpose and it was called like that but that was created like 10 years ago right now. Everybody should use the same.

Not and open Telemetry is actually right now merging that was announced yesterday or the two days ago. They are managing with the elastic common schema for logs, which is great. And because this schema is going to be used industry white we are going to use this for the dashboard as well.

So if you go if you come to Sumo logic from the other tool that is open Telemetry, you can search using this same schema. So pod name is going to be here. Thanks, very place.

You can have like both dashboards, or maybe you can correlate the data because they are the same schema everywhere. Excellent work it for people want to get more information on this. Where can they go?

Also first thing would be probably the open telemetal website, but also our someologic com website. We have a great documentation of the open parameter as well. There there is many workshops.

And if you are if you are interested more you should probably attend segmentings open Telemetry is a project that is done by the open open source community. So you have Gatherings every I guess like every week I believe or every two weeks that depends on which part of the open Telemetry you would like to involve yourself. You can go to the meeting if you have any questions, there are maintainers there so you can talk directly to the people who create code and it is awesome.

The community is very virtual meeting. Those are virtual over Zoom right now. Also, there are recorded So, if you're not a type of person that would like to interact with the people life.

You can just watch it work not a bad thing. Yes. Perfect.

It's great. Thank you for coming on and and it sounds like some more logic is on the cloud native boss, right? We are very excited to be here and it's a very very big step for us and it's a you know in a great direction for for obvious for us.

Guess I believe that the open telemetic is Convergence across the whole industry is for the good reasons is to benefit the users the end users all the vendors using the same schema users are here to win action. Absolutely. Thank you for coming on.
