DevOps World by Cloudbees – Kohsuke Kawaguchi, Launchable

We've got another great segment here for you. I really happy. To introduce you think we actually needs no introduction our friend coach, okay.

Kawaguchi or KK is most of us call him KK. First of all, I got to I have to thank you for being up so early. I know you're living on the west coast and we recorded this early in the morning East Coast time.

So, thank you. Thank you for getting up so early to join with us. I wanted to talk to you a little bit today about the upcoming devops World Conference.

Which takes place? It's actually September 27 28th and 29th. With the 27th being some train a day of training opportunity and then the 28th 29th of General Session.

It's in Orlando at the Marriott World world Marriott night Hotel there. And first of all, I wanted to kind of get your opinion. What do you you know, what are you excited about?

Well, I mean for me personally, this is even that's being going on, you know before why at this point they got 10 years or so, so just to see, you know, he's like, you know watching, you know, maybe girl but even well that's just for myself but even among people in the community I always felt like, you know people wanted to sort of slapped the notes with each other. It's like see what other people are doing because let's face it like everything can see their feel little vulnerable eating like, okay. I'm like doing the thing that the like snowflake thing that I'm only I'm doing or am I with the other people going into the direction that the community is going to The times I think it's difficult to get that feel like we are others are going.

From the website or from the Twitter. Whereas like if you see people walking across the hallway in person going to like this conversations or these, you know, these plugins are the details are better story about, you know, we are the energy ease and heat and passion is in the community. So I still can't think of any better replacement than the impersonal event when it comes to that and that's something I miss a lot especially in the coming after underneath.

I think we all miss that a lot KK, you know, look personally, I wrote an article yesterday in one of the themes for devops throughout this year's devops remix. And and I think we do need a devops remix, I think devops in general has has matured and evolved, you know, since you started Jenkins all those years ago. But I've been going to devops real since it was called Jenkins world, right?

And it was always. A good part of it was always about Jenkins and I was oh I marveled as it, you know an outsider. Great because I'm not a Jenkins developer.

I didn't invent I didn't found Jenkins like you but I marveled that the The Passion of the community that the energy Of the community, you know and it wasn't quite frankly just a devotional. Did you know we've done Deva Jenkins days before we called them Cloud these days or Jenkins a we've done devops stays around the world. I've been to them in China and all over Europe and and of course around the US sure what a great Community what a great community and the energy when they get together you it's palpable you can feel it and I'm excited to see that again after two years.

Yeah. I mean, that's really well one. Well, I mean, this is probably too as many open source projects, but when he let you know a lot of people can contribute or like take a meaningful part of this year forward, then these people also, you know wants to be hard and so that creates more interesting kind of me, you know get together.

We're like every like there are a lot of people it's different opinions trying Provide different aspects of this comparative. Let's say you know bend on that show is which might attract a lot of audience, but there are all just trying to hear from one single month and I just find it like a less interesting. It's like a girl, you know, yeah, so democracy is messy that I kind of like it.

It's the same idea. It's a great analogy. You're right.

In particular about this year. It's been other than we're back in person right beyond that. Is there any particular?

Subject or anything that topic that you think will be a devops world that drink our Jenkins users in the audience my friend very interesting. Sure. So it's a possibly the I saw looking at the session with this.

Okay. First of all, I think I miss not to talk about my own sessions you but I come back to that but this is yes, but the musicians I was looking at the end of these then they saw that the they're the presentation from the core contributors about where they're trying to take the agency the next and that Holy Spirit. I don't really involved in the dinky's project anymore.

But that was really exciting only because you know the in the past we spend a little therefore the UI project but we also which means something but then you know, it's sort of I got the a bit of a store if I may say so the index like there's some need interesting notate this project forward somewhere. So that's the exciting for me. I know in the past that it is the ocean conversation has been quite the people attractors.

So yeah, I I be certainly there myself. Absolutely. It sounds like a good one.

What about your session? Right? So, you know one of the things I started doing.

Well I what excited doing after thinking this project. Is that okay? So the Jenkins like raise the more automation.

So all these automation is producing lots of data, but like, you know using those state that they make ourselves more productive, but that's a mission of a lot of what we're working on the past few years forward. So I do, you know use the date that they make ourselves productive. Well one easy target that everybody have these the flaky tests meaning tests around them.

We sleep their results creating, you know, it's infections. They studied what's going on in the industry. This is the probability problem and then it's gonna sharing the practice and like the challenges that these different engineering olds and how they are.

Okay, so I'm hoping that the wherever you are in the journey, you know, you find some interesting useful insights. Article basically test and then be able to apply that in your own for us. Absolutely, you know Jenny.

Yeah. Okay. You may say you're not involved in the Jenkins project anymore.

But I think they'll always be a part of KK in the Jenkins project. Right? Because the Legacy and everything is there tonight.

I think they the folks in the Jenkins community. right Yeah, look to you. Yeah for me it's a little bit about Indian.

It's obviously I still know a lot of people involved in the effort inside and suddenly the keyboard to be connects, but I'm really actually anything I feel I feel great that this I used to think like the sky would fall if I stopped working on this and that's that's good and okay, that's good. But then that's awesome bad, you know, like I think anything and at some point, you know, it's it's actually good that you're bringing somebody else you brings a different perspective take the product. Yes independent directions.

So the area you bail you do well gets covered. There's some area that you didn't have done but that's that's okay. It's almost the change itself is sometimes valuable.

So, you know, I I found her Goes through that JK ready. It's very hard to let go of your baby. Yeah much as a parent.

We were talking off camera about kids in schools and everything. It's very hard to let go and realize that you know what you've helped. grow is capable of existing without you right?

It's almost like it almost makes you humid right to realize that it's gonna go on when you're not there. That's and and so that's a big thing. But of course, you know look people in the audience always you're interested in what you're up to and what you're doing and you have you you have in and our Pete saying you're co-founded a company called launchable You're co-ceos.

For those maybe watching in the community who haven't been paying attention or just wondering what's happening with lunchable. How about a quick update if you don't mind sure. Yeah.

So this Netflix is one thing right? So outlines of all that I already talked about. I'm not really talking about what we do but more broadly need to see that this that's one of the things we do, but our primary focus is actually called the predictive test selections and it's actually goes back Imaging stays there.

You know, you have a established code base it be brown field applications, right? Okay years of history. And so you within the code base is Lord, but you change is doing incremental you're making one bug except the time here doing improvements they are and so and so forth when you make that kind of small change, we always have to wait for a whole hour for the 18,000 unit test of the Yankees the past and then like the more become but I always thought okay.

Making this video change here. Like, you know, I know that the not all 18,000 tests are very bound. That's a small part small number of tested.

I've been sufficient if you know, it's tests are very well. And then so that is drastically reduce the throne around time and making it easier to make small tendies. I you know as I think he's Pander I was talking to a lot of software development teams and turn that that this is not a unique problem in thinkings.
