Go Cloud Careers CEO Mike Gibbs explains why IT professionals will need to up their game as almost every hands-on IT task gets automated by generative artificial intelligence (AI) platforms such as GPT-3.

We're here with Mike Gibbs whose CEO for go Cloud careers. And we're talking about the impact AI will have on Career is especially in the technology sector Mike. Welcome the show.
Good to be here Michael. I think what we're really having is the modern version of who Moved My Cheese conversation. First of all, did my cheese get moved and be where and what's the impact and a lot of folks are looking at this not just intact but they're saying does this GPT stuff mean that my job is gonna go away or is it gonna be changed in a way that I don't recognize it anymore.
What's your sense of what's going on here? I think there's a lot going on to me chat GPT is the ultimate disruptive technology and it will change the way we live work and play. Now I think many jobs will be completely gone and many new jobs will be created at the same time and I'll tell you who's most vulnerable first at least in my perspective and I've been in this industry for about 25 years.
Hands-On technology people coders systems administrators whether it be a Cloud app and a network. Admin. I see them in real trouble because Chachi PT can write a python script.
Try GPT can write a terraform script. For example, I can figure the cloud and it can do basic things. No that does not mean all programmers are gone.
And it doesn't mean all technology professionals are gone. It means those that have basic skills. Now the elite people that are really great that are Specialists are experts.
I still see a need for them because the technology isn't perfect. It's still flood but it's still pretty good and it's only in beta phase and this is with micro before Microsoft's 10 billion dollar investment, but As these engineering jobs goes away. We have to remember the technology is not human.
It can't build the team. It can't lead a team. They can't connect with the chief executive officer.
It can't connect to the sea. I oh it can't deliver a presentation to create budget and a client and it can't integrate all the various pieces of Technology together in a matter that does digital transformation. So while I see basic Hands-On only positions going away.
I see a tremendous number of cloud architect Enterprise architect artificial intelligence architect positions coming here people that can take the various Technologies bring them together to drive business value, but the Hands-On only people The people without the communication skills the soft skills the executive presence of leadership. It's a very scary to me now. I suggest that I've been retraining engineers in this basic world to move up into architecture roles, or at least develop those business skills to tie the technology.
To business problems because AI is not human and it can't do those human things. So the secret to our success and my perspective and my 25 years experience is being more human actually. The career path for a lot of folks was you did those Hands-On things for a long time and then eventually someone determined that you had this off skills or you were smart enough to promote but if all that winds up getting automated does the definition of what constitutes an entry level position start to change because we're going to expect people to be more knowledgeable when they arrive and those jobs are not going to be about wiring things together per se so, you know, it's interesting and I've heard this my whole life I practice internal medicine is an earth partition or my first job was a senior engineer.
I never had anything like that and I Was An Architect within six months in the last several years. I've trained people and they work at AWS. They work at Azure.
They work at JPMorgan Chase. They work at Deloitte. They work at bearing point.
They work at Accenture kept Gemini on whether they've never worked in Tech before in their life that are just trained as Architects as their first job. So the key is, you know, engineering doesn't really make somebody an architect even though we used to think it did. It's a completely different skill set.
So the key is trained for the job you want get the job you desire and I truly believe we're gonna see a lot more people who take on architecture roles and more digital transformation roles as their first job. It's just a matter of training different you can either train and learn how to build something or you can train in learning how to design something. And fundamentally I feel building training is wrong.
For example, if you wanted to have an architect design a shopping mall. And you taught them construction how to use a number a hammer and a screwdriver and a nail gun. How does that prepare the design the shopping mall?
It doesn't and that's why I feel that Architects and Engineers need separate training. So when we work with Engineers, we're working on their executive presence communication skills leadership skills from day one when we're working on Architects. We're training the same thing because we don't feel that the tech only is going to be enough in the future.
Do you think we'll see a lot more people coming into quote unquote Tech from outside attack? Because it will become more accessible and the jobs you're describing speak to a way of thinking as much as they do, you know an actual technical skill. Absolutely.
I wanted to prove it to someone my engineering students and I said you can't be Hands-On anymore. You need to be more and I said, what do you mean? I used shot GPT and I wrote a python script the automate something that I wanted to do.
I read a terraform script which is infrastructure as close to the cloud computing to deploy the technology immediately. I did it for an AWS cloud formation script to do the same and I generated configurations for all kinds of Technologies. So really the critical thinking the ability to get the requirements from the customer.
The ability to figure out which problems and people processing Technologies need to be solved. That's the big thing. And yeah, I see a lot more people like me that come from Healthcare that are working in technology or other Industries moving into technology because they have those people skills the leadership skills and business skills, and I've been training them now for a while and they're wildly successful in architecture course.
Of course humans only get smarter at a certain Pace in the machine seem to be getting smarter at a faster pace. So as you look down the road and people are already talking about Chad GPT for five and above. How do you think this is gonna evolve because it's not just related to writing code.
You mean we got video and audio and all kinds of stuff coming down the pike. we do in well chat gpt's a chat, but I actually asked chat TP to calculate a ballistic solution to see if it could do other things like potentially flying airplanes in the future by calculating vectors and it did it immediately and it was instantly, correct. So I you know, try tpt's in beta right now Microsoft's got a 10 billion dollar investment.
They're not going to be the last. I see this moving into self-driving cars self-lying cargo plane stealth driving delivery trucks as it evolves as graphics processor performance gets better the chips that most of the stuff is done on and some of this moves off of Geographics processes into Hardware something called an Asic that does something much faster with less power. I see a lot of things Music Creation art creation video creation.
Blog writing going out of style because you can write a blog instantly with this. Taking text and creating presentations and potentially flying airplanes and driving cars even though that's a bit of elite from where it is. Now as a chat device, it can still calculate ballistics.
It can still calculate vectors and things like that. I think part of the way we want to think about. This is we've created a whole Army of people whose job.
It was to communicate with machines. If you think about this hard the GP team system has come up with a way from the machines to communicate with the humans. So maybe we need to just rethink that whole layer.
What does that man machine interface going to look like? And we do and we have to think about it from a corporate perspective. What is the CEO's job of a publicly traded company is to increase shareholder value either by increasing Professor decreasing costs.
So this technology can make the organization more competitive. But also more efficient chat GPT does not ask for a raise. It doesn't ask for a four-day work week.
It doesn't get tired. It doesn't need health insurance. So I think we have to move on from training machines to think.
What can the machines do for us? What skills do we need to leverage the machines to make our lives better instead of stealing from us and taking our jobs away. So once your best advice to folks who are a new to the field in terms of they're just getting out of college or they're just entering college and they're looking at their career.
What should they be focused on? Well because I specialize in technology careers, especially the elite ones. I've been taking technology professionals and retraining them.
I've been teaching them all how to present how to all become what's called cxo relevant and learn to speak to the c-suite. how to actually get the information to get customer requirements you can actually design the right solution how to take people from various countries various cultures and various technology backgrounds and Technology tools and bring them together for a solution and really how to sell and how to lead and how to negotiate because we have to remember we're still humans. And no one person can know anything everything they can know something.
So the reality is the bigger the team we can build the more diverse the team and is the better we are so I'm training all my technology Professionals in those human leadership skills the same kind that you would get in business school plus after business school. I'm training that to all the technology professionals. I work with because I think Tech skills are just not enough and I think a lot of tech people are going to be blindsided by it if they're only focused on the tech and it's terrifying to me for them.
We have joked over the years about you know, left running versus right brain and it seems like a lot of the tasks that might have been handled by one side of the brain are getting increasingly automated. So do we need to use the entire brain now, we actually do and we keep that in our training, you know, I'd taken some mental training from the Navy SEAL many years back and he said some of you are left brain some of you are right brand and it's not good enough. You need to be both.
And he had all the people doing various things. I started practicing yoga 16 years ago because I'm stiff and don't move naturally and it taught me how to think and feel differently. I studied art.
Why because on the left brain person and it really needed it. So then I started studying speech pattern psychology Behavioral Science. Well, we're right brain stuff.
So yes, I think we need to be balanced people. I don't think they can be either or I think we need to be both in today's world like the doctor. They're left brain, but they connect to patients.
Which is real right brain, too. So at the end of the day, this could be good for us in that and will force us to become more multidisciplinary maybe. I think it can be I think it'll be highly traumatic to some and Incredibly beneficial for others.
And as long as we don't forget that we are human. That we need other humans. That if we become better increase our soft skills our leadership and learn how to bring out the best in others.
This technology can serve us to all have a better lifestyle. Is if we stay me me and we focus on just the tech. We can't compete with the machines.
The machines are going to be better at the tech than we are but it's what the tech can do for us that architecture piece is truly exciting for me. This is this is a wonderful place for digital transformation. They're not only can help better if that businesses, but it can help all of us in our life.
