Good morning, good afternoon, good evening to wherever you are currently located. My name is Rainer Schroeder. I'm key account director at Google's Cloud Business in Germany with a special dedication to the automotive industry.
With me is Emil Siemes, also based in Germany. Emil is a specialist for application modernization and hybrid cloud solutions. Hello, everyone.
Emil and I have the pleasure to present to you what Google and Alphabet are offering to the automotive industry. Did I say Google and Alphabet? So what are those two and how are they connected to each other?
Well, back in October 2015, Alphabet replaced Google as a publicly traded entity. Alphabet can be seen mostly as a collection of companies. The largest of which, of course, is Google.
And when we look back to 1998, this is how Google at those days appear to the public as bandwidth was at those times precious, our web page should show up within a second or two. So no frills but made to the point. Nowadays, Google is part of, a very big part of Alphabet.
And what is Alphabet? Yeah, a collection of companies. Some are even pretty far afield of our main Internet products.
For example, our health efforts. Life science that works on the glucose sensing contact lens and Calico focused on longevity. But within this collection of companies, there's also a lot in for the automotive space.
Because mobility is a very important part of what we do at Google and at our parent company Alphabet. So we have several high profile efforts in this space. So Google and Alphabet are partners to the automotive industry in several ways.
Speaking about partners. First of all, CloudBees is a very important partner to Google in the space of CI/CD and software delivery management. This was just recently highlighted by awarding CloudBees with the Google Cloud Technology Partner of the Year award.
Congratulations CloudBees. And thanks a lot for having us. So where's it partnering with the automotive industry?
For example, around researched projects based on quantum computing of Daimler and Alphabet joint R&D efforts. This dates back from early 2018, and later that year, Daimler and Google began fundamental research projects around materials science and chemical simulation. What ideas do we have to touch the Automotive?
Well, of course, Waymo as misunderstood as Google builds cars. No, we don't. But we are enabling autonomous cars and while doing this, partnering with companies like Lexus, Jaguar or Renault-Nissan, we all also a part of the PAVE initiative.
PAVE is a coalition of industry, nonprofit and academic institutions with one goal to inform the public about automated vehicles and their potential. So everyone can fully participate in shaping the future of transportation. By the way, have a look on this video.
This is an onboard camera of, Yes, that was our first technology of building, that is Google car. There's no driver inside with you. So you can imagine a little bit why the people on the seat of this car are really literally like, wow, what's going on?
Finally connectivity made it to cars. Android, well known from mobile phones has the Android Automotive OS. That was just recently released on the Polestar 2 fully electric car.
This is a great car, it's coming from Sweden. And Polestar is it's a subsidiary of Volvo. But also, Google Maps is widely used for navigating through the world, maybe in cars by feet or in public transport.
And then Google CabReal now named Google Maps platform for ride sharing. Well, I still love Google CabReal as a brand name, but Google Maps platform for ride sharing helps ride sharing services improve the customer and drive experience. But finally, I and also Emil with me here at this presentation.
We are both personally part of Google Cloud. And within the following slides, focus on Google Cloud and Automotive. Google Cloud makes a technology that powers our consumer products, such as search for example, it available to enterprises.
Google Cloud is fully independent to the consumer business of Google. So let's have a look what's in for the automotive industry when working with Google Cloud. As an example in the automotive industry, marketing and sales.
We see one of the major challenges being the fragmentation of customer data. Customer data resides at the OEMs, at the dealerships, at the vehicles and in external sources. We at Google Cloud have created an integrated view of the customer.
This helps improve the targeting of your investments in the customer. And by better understanding the customer, it helps as well to make sure you are developing and producing the cars your customers are looking for. Let me give you another example where Google Cloud supports the automotive industry.
Autonomous driving, this is perhaps the most dramatic revolution in mobility and the combination of its impact on technology and business models. Building a safe driver is one of the most demanding machine learning problems, and in order to validate their algorithms the GM subsidiary Cruise simulates 30,000 cars on Google Cloud every single day. In doing this, they leverage our purpose-built machine learning chips, which we call Cloud TPU's, which are about 20 to 27 times faster than GPU's in training at scale, and finally, turning to DevOps and CI/CD within the automotive ecosystems, we understand that cars today have more lines of code than airplanes.
Imagine more lines of code than airplanes. I'm sure you know this, creating those great software solutions, while the consumers want more and want it now, often involves owned, shared, and third party resources. Up to 80 percent of code may come from open source, from suppliers, from partners.
And well, no OEM can easily force external resources to use Cloud A or platform B for their work. So hybrid and multi Cloud are key to success. If you took a new case, comfortainment.
We all know infotainment is usually outdated when the car hits the road. To make that development of infotainment faster and more agile, hybrid and multi Cloud can play a very important part. Look, for example, today, the hottest selling car accessories in China, well, this is the smartphone holder where you can use your smartphone as a kind for infotainment base and there and use the navigation system instead of using the built in kind of infotainment system.
So to change this, we offer a very interesting hybrid multi Cloud solution. So let me hand over to Emil. Emil will now lead you through Google's hybrid and multi Cloud solutions.
Emil. Now it's your part. Thank you Rainer.
You know, I think we jump to the next slide here. Thank you. So Anthos is really our solution for hybrids and multi Cloud.
And you saw Rainer already talking a bit about it and now they're diving in and I get a little bit more technical background. What it really is, and what the benefits are. First of all, it's our application, our platform for application modernization.
So it's really something where you are deploying your application on to. Rainer, maybe we go to the next slide. Yeah.
So let me start with Google's point of view of how companies of the future automotive, but also non-automotive companies will and should develop software. So over the last couple of years, we have seen developers being very efficient and successful with container rising applications because within the container they can bundle all the dependencies of an application into this container and this image and run it on their development machine, but also in the production or test integration without any changes. And also, micro services is really away to make the whole software development more agile.
So you have, you know, smaller teams, these teams have the option to choose the best tools for their part of the application. So that's very important. And then these micro services built out of containers, need to be run on a platform and they're a declarative system is what seems to be the right answer, and that our success with Borg, which is Google's internal container orchestration platform, was basically the, yeah, the idea to bring that out to our customers in terms of Kubernetes.
Kubernetes which is just such a declarative system and it's built after Googles Borg and it has a single control experience or a single pane of glass. And on top of that, the server smash, which makes it even easier and faster for developers to build applications because some of the functionality which in earlier times was built really into the application, doesn't need to be built into the application any longer. But it's really provided by the platform, by the system, and that obviously you want to span this platform about all your application locations.
Normally, we recommend our customers and users to combine that with CI/CD pipelines and we are really open here and very happy to join forces with CloudBees. So right now, please. Next slide.
Yeah. So Anthos is our hybrid multi cloud solution. And what is that really this engine speeds.
So first of all, I should mention that it's a 100 percent software stack. So there's no hardware involved basically, in the Google Cloud, it's a service which can run on DOS in Google cloud, of course, but it's also possible to run it on PRAM. So your own on PRAM infrastructure on VMware and the future on benmetal, but also on other clouds, which is the multi cloud capabilities.
So let's assume you're building a connected car backend then you might decide in the US to to run your applications on Google Cloud and Anthos, but what do you do in China? Of course, China is different. There is no Google Cloud.
The data in China is not allowed to get out of China. So you have to have a local solution there to run your applications. So with Anthos, you can install it on PRAM in China are on and other infrastructure as a service provider and still have the same platform on the same applications as in Google Cloud.
So they'll be, again, single application platform. You don't have to modify your applications. Next slide, please Rainer.
Yes. So now we are drilling a little bit deeper here and see what's in it. Maybe we start on the bottom here.
You can see the container management part, the container orchestration part, and clearly that's built on the Kubernetes. So Anthos, Google created engine is really the container orchestrator of Kubernetes in Anthos. But then there are more parts on on top of that, because as you might know, Kubernetes is a very nice system in a way that it allows you to plug in a lot of components.
On the other hand, it's complex because you have to have multiple plug ins to make it really useful. And so we're helping and enriching the pure Anthos Kubernetes engine by these plug ins. So on the right side, maybe we'll see operation management.
We are using Stackdriver for that. Stackdriver is Google's management debugging, logging solution for for basically all our Google Cloud offerings. And on the left side, you have the policy management that's also very important in Kubernetes, you want to make sure that all your Kubernetes engines comply to the same policy, security settings and so on.
So you want to automate that and that's part of the policy management. And then in the middle, you see the Anthos service mesh, which, as I mentioned on the other slide, really helps the developers to focus on the business logic and don't have to deal with things like how do I encrypt the traffic? How do I deal with failing backends?
And how do idea with network policy ends and so on. So this really shouldn't be part of the application, but handled by the service management and under service mesh based on is still the component which is part of Anthos. Then on the top of the application development.
So on the one hand, this means there is a marketplace where a lot of components are readily available, which you normally find distributed applications nowadays, you know, just databases or search engines. No single databases on that stuff. But also Cloud Run for Anthos, which is built on K- Native, which allows you to run serverless, if you will.
All right. Rainer, please, next slide. Yes.
With Anthos it's also very important to understand that there is no lock in. So as I mentioned, I just spilled on Kubernetes, that's the container orchestrator. Then you have these service mesh that's based on Istio and for the developer party, the Cloud Run, that's built on Knative.
So I think that's important for our customers, that if they choose Anthos to run their applications on, they know that for whatever reasons in the future they might decide to not run on Anthos any longer, they are not locked in so they can go directly to Knative or Istio or Kubernetes and run the applications without Anthos. We would be very sad, but you have the choice. Rainer, next slide please.
Yeah, and I think you can just click through the animation. So as the end of the presentation, I wanted to summarize a bit what it is and give you the story behind the name, because I think it's really funny. So, again, it's Anthos, it's open, it's hybrid, and it's multi Cloud and allows you to modernize your applications, build new ones, cloud native based ones, and then run them anywhere in a secure way.
And the story behind Anthos, the name is really that, so, Kubernetes is a Greek word for pilot, basically. So in the Kubernetes space, there are a lot of Greek names around and Anthos basically means flower in Greek and a flower grows in your own garden. That's the on premise part, but it needs a little bit drained from the clouds from time to time.
So that's why we call the product Anthos. All right. Thank you so much.
