Um, hi everyone. I'm super excited to be presenting at the Artificially Intelligent Enterprise Conference at 2024. I will be talking about deployments at LinkedIn.
Uh, today we will delve into how LinkedIn, a leader in professional networking has embraced and advanced its site reliability engineering practices to enhance its computing capabilities and streamline its deployment processes. As we explore LinkedIn's journey, I'll cover the innovative strategies and tools that drive our DevOps culture, ensuring continuous integration and delivery and improvement. By leveraging cutting edge technologies and fostering a collaborative environment.
LinkedIn not only enhances operational efficiency, but also delivers superior user experiences. Please join me as I share insights, challenges, and successes from our, um, deployment initiatives illustrating how we maintain agility, reliability, and scalability in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. In today's agenda, we'll cover topics, um, going over, uh, guiding principles, why DevOps is critical for LinkedIn's operation goals of DevOps strategy, a high level architecture, and and what did we do differently this time, and also covering the, um, aspects of technical program management and closing out with what we look ahead with all things ai.
So our team's mission is to enable a seamless unified deployment experience. This means ensuring that the process of rolling out updates to our applications is smooth, efficient, and consistent. Our vision is to empower every team to reliably deploy their services in an automated fashion.
We aspire to create an environment where teams can deploy their code, changes with confidence, knowing that the deployment process is reliable and hassle-free. We also value the ability to deliver deployments quickly and reliably. This means reducing the time it takes to deploy changes while ensuring that the deployment process is robust.
We are committed to boosting productivity by streamlining the deployment process. By eliminating manual interventions, our aim is to free up valuable time and resources for teams to focus on value added work. We recognize the importance of reducing operational friction.
We aim to minimize this by improving the overall deployment experience. So why DevOps is critical for LinkedIn's operation in the competitive landscape of social networking and professional platforms, the ability to quickly deploy new features and updates is crucial. DevOps practices, particularly continuous integration and continuous deployment, the CICD enable deploy, uh, enable LinkedIn to roll out changes rapidly responding to user feedback and market demands.
Swiftly, DevOps fosters a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement by breaking down silos between development operations and other teams. Our LinkedIn pivots more easily when priorities or external conditions change. This flexibility is essential for maintaining relevance and meeting user needs In a dynamic digital environment.
LinkedIn's platform must be reliable and stable to maintain user trust and satisfaction. DevOps practices like automated testing, monitoring, and incident management ensure that the, uh, potential issues are identified and resolved before they impact the end users. We have many inbuilt tools for logging that provides real time insights into system performance, enabling, uh, proactive maintenance and quick recovery from failures.
By adopting infrastructure as code and configuration management tools, LinkedIn ensures consistent and predictable infrastructure configurations across all environments. This consistently reduces the risk of configuration drift and unexpected issues contributing to overall system reliability. As LinkedIn's user base continues to grow, the platform must scale efficiently to accommodate increasing traffic and data.
DevOps practices facilitate this scalability by automating infrastructure management and leveraging cloud technologies. Kubernetes, for example, orchestrates containerized applications, ensuring that the uh, resources are, are allocated, are allocated dynamically based on demand. DevOps enables LinkedIn to optimize the use of, uh, computing resources, ensuring that the platform can handle P loads without over provisioning.
This efficiency not only supports scalability, uh, without over provisioning, but also supports, um, uh, but also reduces operational costs, allowing LinkedIn to invest more in innovation and user experience improvements. So the goals of DevOps strategy at LinkedIn is that, uh, one of our primary goal is to increase the velocity and frequency of our deployments by automating our deployment pipeline and adopting continuous, um, integration and continuous deployment. The CICD practices, we can release new features and update more quickly.
This rapid iteration allows us to respond to our user feedback promptly, stay ahead of competitors, and continuously improve our platform. Reliability and scalability are crucial for maintaining user trust and satisfaction. We focus on building resilient systems through automated testing, monitoring, fall tolerance, uh, architecture by proactively identifying and addressing potential issues before they affect the users.

We encourage our dev teams to regularly evaluate and enhance processes, processes, tools, and workflows. Efficient resource management is key to maintaining performance while controlling costs.
We utilize IAC, which stands for infrastructure as a code to automate resource provisioning and scaling. Security and compliance are also integral to our operations. We integrate security checks into our DevOps pipelines, ensuring that code change is scrutinized for vulnerabilities by adhering to our regulatory requirements and implementing robust security measurements.
We protect user data and maintain compliance with industry standards. As LinkedIn continues to grow, our systems need to scale efficiently. We design our architecture and processes to support this growth seamlessly.
Collaboration is also at the heart of our DevOps strategy. We break down silos between development operations and other teams to foster a collaborative environment. So now moving into a quick, uh, technical deep dive.
This is the high level topology of LinkedIn's continuous deployment. It has the, um, LCD front end, the LCD, uh, backend, and the, uh, client layers. We have designed this architecture in a modular fashion, so each component you see here is replaceable.
For example, we have a, a deployment policy engine, a one stop shop for all deployment related policies, which is built upon, uh, open policy agent. It is an open source and a strong industry, uh, community, uh, support platform, and it can be replaced with another policy engine without impacting other components of this architecture. So this architecture is low QPS system, but guarantees that deployment pipelines will execute with certainty, and if it fails, users will get alerted.
So what did we do differently? This time? We finally moved away from a legacy system that was, uh, over 10 years old.
We modernized orchestration engine. So we've remained, uh, so we've basically, uh, reimagined, uh, orchestration by leveraging cutting edge technologies to create and streamline engine that drives efficiency and flexibility. Our modernized approach ensures seamless integration with diverse systems and processes, enabling faster deployment and easier management of workflows.
We've also modularized our platform. Our platform is designed with modularity at its core, offering partners the freedom to customize and scale their orchestration pipelines according to their unique requirements. By breaking down complex workflows into modular components, we've, we empower partners to mix and match functionalities, optimize resource utilization, and adapt swiftly to evolving business needs.
We've also democratized orchestration of pipelines. We believe in democratizing technology and our approach to orchestration reflects this ethos Through intuitive interfaces and user friendly tools, we empower partners of all skill levels to create and manage orchestration pipelines with ease. Whether you're a seasoned developer or a business user with no coding experience, our platform provides the tool you need to orchestrate workflows efficiently and effectively.
No-code and low-code solutions can significantly reduce the, uh, time required to develop and deploy applications, prebuilt components and drag and drop interfaces streamline the development process, allowing teams to focus on higher level tasks and strategic initiatives. Observability tools provide real-time insights into the, uh, deployment pipeline, allowing teams to monitor each stage of the deployment process. This visibility ensures that any issues can be quickly identified and addressed, reducing the risk of deployment failures and downtime.
So I'll, I'll go over quickly. What is the tech technical program, uh, management aspect of this? Um, uh, pro project at LinkedIn, uh, we prioritize understanding our users to enhance, uh, their experience through surveys, interviews, uh, and usability testing.
We gather insights to align our features with the needs of professionals and recruiters. We closely monitor every stage of our, uh, deployment pipe pipeline to identify and address, uh, bottlenecks, reduce errors and minimize downtime. This ensures smooth rollouts of new features and updates without disrupting the uh, user experience.
Feedback is integral to our deployment process. We collected through various channels, including direct user feedback, customer support, social media to understand the, uh, reception of new features, identify issues early and make prompt adjustments. Data analysis is crucial for informed decision making.
By analyzing user, um, engagement metrics, performance logs and error rates, we gain insights to identify trends, measure, feature, impact, and optimize system performance. Our dynamic backlog management process focuses development on the most valuable tasks. Regular reviews and robust feedback loop ensure our priorities align within user insights and business objectives.
We prioritize delivering features requested by our users to address their specific needs and pain points. This user-centric approach enhance the, enhances the overall experience on our platform, making it more valuable and engaging. So looking ahead and talking all things ai.
Uh, LinkedIn is already leveraging AI and ml, which is artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance DevOps processes by automating, uh, routine tasks, uh, such as code reviews, testing, and deployment. This automation reduces manual effort while ensuring higher accuracy and efficiency. LinkedIn uses AI and ML algorithms to predict potential system issues even before they occur.
By analyzing historical data and identifying patterns, these technologies can foresee anomalies enabling proactive maintenance and reducing downtime. LinkedIn has automated routine tasks like resource allocation, load balancing, and system monitoring using AI and ml. This automation frees up valuable time for the DevOps team to focus on more strategic in, uh, initiatives driving innovation and continuous improvement.
LinkedIn is also actively, uh, extending DevOps practices beyond the, uh, development and operation teams fostering a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility, this cultural shift ensures that everyone in the organization, from product managers to designers, are aligned towards a common goal. LinkedIn has broken down silos between different teams to enhance communication and collaboration. Cross-functional teams now work together more effectively leading to faster problem resolution.
By expanding DevOps pro practices across all teams. LinkedIn has standardized workflows and processes, ensuring consistency and improving overall operational efficiency. LinkedIn is also committed to adopting the latest technology and innovations in the DevOps space.
