Um, hi everyone. Uh, good morning. Uh, in today's, uh, DevOps experience, uh, presentation, we will be learning about leveraging low code and no-code platforms in, uh, DevOps.
A little bit about me. Uh, my name is, uh, Neha, and I am currently working as a, uh, TPM at, uh, LinkedIn. And here I work with, uh, very, uh, diverse, uh, teams on the, uh, compute front site, as well as the, uh, service and trust side.
And we are focused heavily on, on DevOps. Uh, in today's agenda, we'll be, uh, going over some of, um, the, uh, areas around, uh, what are low-code, no-code platforms, um, the benefits of low-code, no-code in DevOps, um, the use cases in DevOps, some of the, uh, challenges and what we can consider when implementing this, uh, the, uh, best practices and the, uh, current future trends. Um, let's, uh, dive into, uh, what is low-code code.
Uh, low-code platforms are, uh, development environments, uh, designed to expedite the, uh, creation of applications, software applications, um, by reducing the amount of hand coding, uh, required. Uh, these low-code, uh, platforms, uh, provide visual tools and, uh, prebuilt components, but, uh, still allow, uh, developers to write code when necessary for customization or adding complex features. Um, they strike a balance between, uh, speed and flexibility, uh, enabling, uh, developers to, uh, build more sophisticated applications than no-code platforms, uh, which, uh, typically, uh, allow, uh, users to, um, you know, be a little bit more, uh, conservative.
Uh, low-code platforms, uh, increase, uh, productivity, uh, by automating repetitive, uh, coding tasks. Um, they also offer, uh, greater control over the, uh, application's behavior, uh, making it impossible, uh, to fine tune performance and integrating with various, uh, systems. Um, the low code platforms are ideal for enterprise level applications that, uh, require customization, uh, complex integrations, uh, or need to meet specific performance criteria.
Now, uh, no code platforms, uh, take the, uh, concept a step further, uh, by enabling application development without any, uh, coding whatsoever. Um, they are designed with, uh, non keeping non-developers in, uh, mind and, uh, allowing business users to, uh, create applications through intuitive visual interfaces. Uh, these platforms, uh, feature drag and drop builders, uh, prebuilt templates and, uh, straightforward, uh, configuration options.
Um, the abstract OA all underlying code, uh, so users can, uh, focus on, uh, defining functionality and workflows. Uh, no code platforms, uh, empower business teams, uh, to solve their problems, uh, without meeting for, uh, IT resources. Uh, these are best, uh, suited for creating, uh, simple applications like, uh, data collection forms, uh, basic reporting dashboards, or automating any, uh, routine tasks.
Um, so both low code and no code platforms offer, uh, visual development environments that make, uh, application building more intuitive so users can, uh, design user interface interfaces, uh, by, uh, selecting components from a pallet, arranging them like on a canvas. Uh, and also these, uh, platforms come with a library of, uh, prebuilt components like any buttons, uh, data tables, and just connectors to, uh, ensure all of these, um, services get linked. Uh, these, uh, also help, uh, ensure consistency and, uh, they reduce error by, uh, using, uh, tested and optimized, uh, elements.
Uh, so the drag and drop functionality allows user to, uh, build applications by just simply moving elements into place. Uh, so these, uh, visual approaches reduces the, uh, complexity that is associated with the coding syntax and logical, uh, structures. Um, so non-technical, uh, team members, uh, can, uh, participate in this and also, uh, be, uh, more actively involved in the, uh, development, uh, process.
Uh, so this concept also fosters better communication between like the business team and the, uh, technical team, and they can sort of work in a shared environment. Uh, also any changes can be made quickly and visualized immediately. Um, so it facilitates a lot of agile development process within your software development teams.
Um, this also, uh, you know, encourages experimentation and, uh, innovation, uh, without the overhead of extensive, uh, coding. Uh, so let's move into, uh, the, uh, benefits of low-code. No-code platforms in DevOps.
Uh, this provides for an accelerated development, uh, um, you know, which is, which you can think as probably the most, uh, immediate benefit, uh, low-code and no-code platforms. They drastically reduce the, uh, time required to develop applications. So by leveraging visual interfaces, the prebuilt components, the drag and drop functionality that I mentioned, uh, development cycles are significantly, uh, shortened.
Uh, this, uh, speed is very crucial in today's fast-paced, uh, market where, uh, time to market can be competitive and it will give you like a better, uh, edge when shipping products. Um, so for example, uh, let's actually, um, consider a scenario where, uh, building a custom application from scratch would take several months, um, using a low-code platform, uh, this, uh, timeline can be shortened to several weeks or even days. So, additionally, uh, the, uh, development processes are a little bit more ST streamlined.
Uh, so the automated, uh, workflows and integration with CICD pipelines, they enable faster and more reliable deployments. Uh, let's look into the impact on, uh, DevOps. Um, here, the accelerated development, uh, aligns perfectly with DevOps principles of continuous delivery and iterative, um, improvement.
Uh, teams can also, uh, release, uh, updates more frequently, get fa uh, get feedback, and also, uh, iterate, uh, more quickly. Um, the reduced, uh, workload on developers is also another, uh, significant, uh, benefit, uh, by handling routine and repetitive tasks. Through low-code, no-code platforms, developers can redirect their efforts towards more complex and critical aspects of any, uh, given project.
Uh, this means, uh, focusing on areas that require deep technical expertise, uh, such as optimizing your system architecture, improving application performance, uh, developing, uh, innovative, uh, features that differentiate the, uh, product. Um, alleviating the, uh, burden of mundane, uh, tasks also enhances developer satisfaction and productivity. Uh, it also leads to, uh, improved, you know, resource utilization, uh, because organizations can make better use of their, uh, development resources.
And also the, uh, project timelines can be managed more effectively with critical tasks receiving the necessary attention. So, the impact of this on, in, on DevOps is that, uh, this, uh, shift allows DevOps teams to optimize workflows and improve the overall efficiency. Uh, teams can focus on automating processes, uh, uh, enhancing security and ensuring reliability.
So the enhanced collaboration, uh, benefit is facilitated by the accessibility of low-code and no-code, uh, platforms. Uh, these, uh, platforms actually bridge the gap between the IT and, uh, business units. Um, so the business stakeholders can, uh, participate directly in the, uh, development process.
Um, they can also articulate requirements more precisely, uh, through, uh, visual, uh, models. Um, so there is also improved communication here because visual, um, representations of, uh, various workflows and interfaces reduce any, uh, kind of misunderstandings. And also the, uh, teams can collaborate in real time, uh, making adjustments basically on the, on the fly.
Uh, uh, uh, uh, the alignment, uh, with, uh, business, uh, goals, uh, ensures that, uh, the applications developed are closely aligned, uh, with business needs. Uh, they also, uh, reduce the risk of, uh, costly, uh, reworks due to, uh, misaligned objectives. Um, the impact of this on DevOps is that, uh, DevOps emphasizes on a culture of collaboration between the development and operation teams.
Uh, it includes, um, business, uh, units. Uh, we, uh, extend this, uh, collaborative, uh, culture across, uh, the organization, which leads to better products and, uh, faster delivery, uh, cycles. Uh, increased innovation arises from the ability to, uh, quickly, uh, prototype and, uh, test new ideas.
So, the, uh, low-code, no-code platforms make it feasible to experiment with new concepts, uh, without significant investment. Uh, here teams can build prototypes rapidly, gather feedback, and quickly iterate. Um, so, um, also, um, uh, the, uh, uh, it, it reduces barriers, uh, to innovation.
Uh, so the, uh, traditional, uh, development cycles, uh, can, uh, generally be extremely, uh, lengthy and, uh, resource intensive, uh, lowering these, uh, barriers, uh, encourage, uh, teams, uh, to explore creative, uh, solution. Um, so you're also able to fail faster and learn faster. So this supports, uh, the agile approach where ideas can be tested and either scaled up or discarded, uh, quickly.
Um, empowered, uh, citizen, uh, developers refers to enabling non-technical staff members on your team to actively participate in the development process. So, the, uh, business unit u uh, users who understand the, uh, processes, uh, customer needs, uh, various kind of workflows, um, uh, best can help build applications, uh, to address specific tailored, uh, needs. And also, uh, some of the challenges that probably, um, are not, uh, um, you know, uh, seen from like the, uh, development, uh, side.
Uh, so the, uh, benefits of, uh, empowering, uh, citizen, uh, developers is, um, it increases the organization's, uh, capacity, uh, to develop solutions without, uh, overreliance on, uh, your it, uh, division or your development division. Um, it also encourages ownership and accountability among like the, uh, business units. Uh, and it also fosters innovation from like diverse, uh, perspectives.
Uh, the impact on DevOps is that it, uh, expands the, uh, DevOps culture, uh, including a wider range of contributors. Uh, it facilitates, uh, faster responses, um, due to, uh, changing, uh, in business needs. Alright, uh, now, uh, let's, uh, explore some practical use cases where, uh, low-code, no-code platforms can be leveraged within DevOps.
Um, creating internal tools is another area where, uh, low-code, no-code, uh, platforms, uh, shine. Uh, teams often need, uh, custom dashboards or monitoring systems tailored to their specific needs. Uh, so the application of this and DevOps is, uh, custom dashboards and monitoring systems.
Uh, here you are able to develop dashboards that, uh, consolidate metrics from various sources like application performance, your system health, um, and user analytics. Um, you're also able to visualize data through, uh, charts, uh, graphs, alerts without writing, uh, extensive, uh, front end code for monitoring systems. Uh, you can set up monitoring tools, uh, that track the status of like a server, uh, different applications, different services.
And these also help, uh, implement notifications and alerts for any anomalies of failures. Uh, so the benefits is that it improves, uh, visibility into operations, uh, aiding into, uh, proactive decision making. It also empowers teams, uh, to create tools that meet their exact requirements, and it reduces the, uh, reliance on external vendors or, uh, complex, uh, coding, uh, to build, um, internal applications.
Uh, an example is, uh, the operations, uh, team, uh, who can use low code platform to build a custom incident management, uh, system. Um, this is an example from my own team where, uh, they have, um, you know, designed forms for any incident reporting workflows, escalations, dashboards for tracking, uh, incident resolution times. Uh, and this integrates with the existing, uh, communication tools like email or, uh, slack for notifications.
Um, the impact here that we created was that it enhanced the operation team's ability to respond, uh, to issues quickly and efficiently. Uh, it also, uh, promotes like a culture of continuous, uh, improvement by providing the, uh, tools, uh, needed to, uh, monitor and analyze performance. Uh, rapid prototyping is, uh, essential for, uh, innovation and staying ahead of competitive landscape.
Uh, so the low-code, no-code platforms enable teams, uh, to quickly build and test new ideas and, uh, concepts. Um, the application in our DevOps is faster development cycles and experimentation. So here our teams can develop prototypes in days rather than weeks or months.
It allows for immediate feedback and iterative development. Um, the experimentation facilitates experimenting with new technologies, uh, features interfaces, uh, without significant investment. Uh, it also decreases the, uh, risk associated with, uh, exploring unproven ideas.
Uh, so the benefits here, uh, are it accelerates innovation. Uh, it also enhances collaboration between developers and it, uh, improves, uh, product market fit by incorporating, uh, user feedback early in the development process. Um, so an example that I can think of is, uh, about, uh, our product team, uh, which has an idea for a new feature, uh, within, uh, the LinkedIn application.
Um, so using, uh, a low code, uh, platform, they are quickly able to, uh, build a working prototype. Uh, they can test it with a small, uh, group of, uh, users and gather feedback. Uh, and based on the responses, they iterate or decide whether to proceed with full scale development.
Uh, the impact of this is that it speeds up the innovation cycle and reduces time to market for new features. Uh, it also ensures, uh, resources are invested in, uh, the ideas with, uh, validated, uh, potential, uh, process optimization, uh, involves, uh, refining and automating businesses, um, and operational processes, uh, to enhance efficiently. Uh, so the low-code, no-code platforms, um, make it easy to identify bottlenecks and implement solutions quickly.
Uh, the application in DevOps is for, uh, automating any routine tasks, uh, setting up workflow management. And the, uh, benefits here is it enhances productivity. It reduces any errors by minimizing, um, human intervention, and it also improves compliance and governance by enforcing standardized, uh, processes.
Uh, an example that I can think of here is on the, uh, DevOps team, um, when they use the, uh, low-code, no-code, uh, platform to automate the onboarding processes of like new developers. Um, so it automatically pro provisions, uh, development environments, uh, it grants the necessary tools, uh, it, uh, schedules onboarding sessions. Uh, so this also streamlines the, uh, process and ensures, uh, consistently across all our new hires.
Uh, so the impact of this is it improves overall efficiency and allows teams to focus on strategic initiatives. Um, so as we explore the, uh, benefits of use case, uh, use cases of low-code, no-code platforms within DevOps, it's equally important to address the challenges and considerations that come with their adoption. Um, understanding these, uh, challenges, um, help us mitigate any, uh, risks and implement, uh, these, uh, platforms, uh, effectively, uh, citizen, uh, development refers again to the non-technical, uh, staff that use these, uh, no code, uh, platforms.
Uh, the potential security risks that we see here are any sort of data leakage, uh, compliance violations or unauthorized, uh, access while, uh, low-code. No-code platforms excel at rapid development. They may, uh, face, uh, scalability challenges when dealing with complex or large scale applications.
Uh, so the scalability concerns here are related to performance limitations or, uh, infrastructure constraints. Uh, performance limitations, uh, are when platforms, uh, are not able to handle high transaction, uh, volumes efficiently. And, uh, resource intensive operations might lead to a slower performance.
Uh, the, uh, con, uh, the infrastructure constraints, uh, limit, uh, control over the, uh, underlying infrastructure that can impact scalability. Uh, so one of the challenges, uh, is integrating low-code no-code platforms with existing DevOps tools and practices. Um, so the integration challenges I have seen are like any of the two chain complex, uh, uh, compatibility, uh, where platforms may not seamlessly integrate with the, uh, current CICD pipelines, the version control systems, or even the monitoring tools.
Uh, sometimes process alignment is also an, uh, integration challenge because aligning, uh, platform specific development workflows with established DevOps processes can be quite complex. Um, and also, uh, there could be, uh, data silos because risk of, uh, creating isolated systems, uh, that don't communicate, uh, effectively, uh, with other, uh, applications can also lead, uh, to, uh, this integration challenge. Uh, so low-code, no-code platforms might have limitations and customization, uh, which, uh, can be, uh, restrictive, uh, for, uh, certain, uh, applications.
Um, starting, uh, with, uh, small non-technical, uh, projects, uh, can be one of the, uh, best practices for implementation, uh, when approaching, um, a low-code, no-code, uh, platforms. Uh, these projects serve as a testing ground to understand platform capabilities, uh, or to, uh, develop skills or to also identify, uh, new challenges. Uh, the advantages is that, uh, you know, with mini minimal risk, you're able to iterate quickly, and it also, uh, builds confidence in the product that you are trying to ship.
Uh, providing, uh, proper training and governance is, uh, very crucial to ensure that teams use the, uh, platforms effectively and securely. Uh, and also establishing clear guidelines for usage helps, uh, ensure that everyone understands how and when to use, uh, no-code, low-code, uh, platforms, um, uh, ensuring alignment with overall, uh, DevOps strategy is essential for like a cohesive operations and, um, minimizing benefits of, uh, low-code, no-code platforms. Um, so, uh, the, uh, future, uh, trends, um, uh, of low-code, no-code does, uh, involve increased ai, uh, integration.
Uh, it also will enable for a greater focus on enterprise grade security features, and also lead to the expansion, um, of DevOps, uh, specific, uh, low-code, no-code, uh, tools, and also, uh, integration, uh, with the, uh, traditional, uh, development practices.
