At DevOps Experience 2022, Kaitlin Carrollo, sales engineer at Metallic, discusses future-proof data protection for a hybrid cloud world.
Transcript
Hi, my name is Kaitlin Carrollo. And I'm a sales engineer at CommVault specializing in our software service solution metallic and they were going to talk about how you can not only protect your data with a data management as a service solution. But also how that solution can grow with you as you might look for hybrid Cloud strategy.
We're currently seeing. A few challenges that our customers are facing. As the it landscape evolves some of which being one ransomware attacks are on the rise.
Of course it something that's always top of mind for our customers and we really want to make sure that we keep security top of mind when we're looking at protecting our customers data. Along with things like constrained resources. So as our customers and it organizations look to move to a cloud first approach or a hybrid hybrid Cloud approach.
They might not have the team members who have the skill set for the cloud or who maybe our way down by other responsibilities in their organizations that limit that cloud adoption. One of the third things that we see a lot with our customers is that our data is everywhere whether it's on-prem in the cloud in SAS solution that we're using or even on our users and point devices data is in a lot of different places and so being able to secure that data and protect it is becoming more and more critical for these hybrid Cloud environments. This is really where metallic the software as a service solution from CommVault comes into play and we really wanted to provide a solution to our customers that is simple easy to use but is also Enterprise grade and will provide that level of security as well as cost effectiveness.
And being looking ahead into what is going to be continued Cloud transformation in the future. So when we look at metallic. What we're talking about is a solution that is built in the cloud and it's built on Azure and we're going to be able to protect a wide variety of workloads in our customers environments so that we can ensure that our customers have maximum flexibility and they don't have to you know, adopt different solutions in order to meet their data protection needs.
Well also having a Cutting Edge solution that reduces that overhead of infrastructure so that they can protect those different components of their environment. And in terms of what we can protect with metallic data management as a service we're looking at things like SAS applications and the data that our users are entering into those whether it's CRM tools like Salesforce or Dynamics 365 along with all of the data that gets exchanged between users on Office 365. As well as those infrastructure-based workloads, like virtual machines databases and file servers that can be either on-prem or in the cloud.
Or protecting things like on-prem resources VMware hyper-bvms as well as resources that are in public Cloud providers like Azure or AWS. And most specifically we're continuing to grow our portfolio to cover in either even wider range of solutions and you'll see for our database protection one of those being Azure past databases including Azure SQL and the other platform as a service offerings that they have or databases. Along with that we can also write your data to a secured cloud storage Target provided by us as well as protect some of those other components of your environment like active directory or endpoint devices like your users laptops.
And not only are we going to be offering our customers a wide range of solutions. So you don't have any one piece of your environment that's left out. But we're also giving you flexibility in terms of where your data goes.
How many copies you have especially for those critical components of your environment like your VMS databases and file servers. When looking at these types of workloads, you can back up your data to the cloud to local storage or to storage offerings provided by us like an on-prem appliance or in our storage service. It wouldn't be a cloud conversation.
If we didn't talk about security given that ransomware is so top of mind for a lot of organization. And with metallic we're really using a multi-layered security approach to ensure that from start to finish. Your data is protected secured and safe.
When you're protecting your data again regardless of what network load is if it's in the cloud on-prem or one of those other applications like your endpoints or SAS application. Your data is always going to be encrypted both in-flight and at rest with AES 256 bit encryption. That data is going to be transmitted over encrypted Network tunnels and because our control plane is running in its own security domain in the cloud along with us having that immutable storage in the cloud too.
We're keeping that isolation between your production environments and your backup copies so that you have that air gap security meaning that if something were to happen in your production environment. It's not going to be able to reach your back up then all of those processes are signed by CommVault and we can't cross over and none of your users are going to be accessing that underlying storage bucket. With that too with your mutable backup copies or of course also going to have robust security controls for your users including zero trust access controls and the ability to integrate with multi-factor authentication tools like a tree OCTA or any SAML application that you might have in place.
And lastly we'll also have reporting tools such as our security IQ dashboard, which will provide insights such as anomaly detection trends that we're seeing in your environment as well as recommendations for how you could secure your environment further one example, being things like a restore authorization workflow where it will require Two Step authorization from two different admins before that process can be executed. These are all tools that you can manage from the one centralized interface again so that you have that coverage of all of your different environments while maintaining that super tight cured backup and Recovery. Protection One other tool that we recently brought into the metallic portfolio to really have off our approach for security is metallic throughout wise and this is a cyber deception cool can be used to please fake Assets in your environment so that you can throw attackers off the trace of your most valuable Assets in your environment while so gathering information about those attackers.
A lot of times when we think about security especially from the context of backup. We're thinking about having that secured copy, which is really important so that if an event does occur we can then restore from that copy. However, there are other implications to data being compromised by Bad actors including that data being stolen or misused after it gets compromised.
So a cool like throat wise is used to plant those fake assets in your environment. So that not only can you one send attackers in the wrong direction make them think something as valuable that might not be but you can also collect information about that attacker and then see where vulnerabilities might be in your environment. This is one of the newest components of our portfolio and we're seeing a lot of interest as it really rounds out your security process before your data is compromised all the way then through using metallic to then recover your data.
The last thing we want to highlight here is one of our promotions that's going on for a limited time, which is a buy three get one free on our metallic virtual machine 10 packs. So when you're protecting your VM or your kubernetes applications within metallic, we're going to license that based on how many VMS you actually have. So if you purchase three packs of 10, you'll get one free and can protect up 40 virtual machine without license thing and this is going to be valid from now until March 31st of next year.
And now we'll close out for any questions and thank you so much for the time. If you want to give Metallica try you can create a free trial at metallic I/O slash trial. It's a free 30 days.
You can test it out and see all of the different ways that we can protect your data through ass delivery model.
